Review: Aoi Hana

Gar nichts.

Alles halb so wild. 9/10

Two Top 5 Anime Lists

[Sauce]

I have two Top 5 lists in my head, both of which have entirely different criteria. Can you spot them on your own?

The first:

  1. Turn A Gundam
  2. Legend of the Galactic Heroes
  3. Giant Robo
  4. RahXephon
  5. Tekkaman Blade

The second:

  1. Eureka Seven
  2. Planetes
  3. Gundam X
  4. Honey & Clover
  5. Seirei no Moribito

The first list shows the kind of stories I love and aspire to write someday(!): intense character dynamics, sprawling worlds of wonder, epic battles on foot and machines, and heartrending rivalries. The second is a list of the most human anime for me. These are the shows that get me through the day and keep me from turning into a misanthropic shithead just by thinking about them. I know it’s a weird criteria, but this list is the main driver for me to watch more anime.

My MAL favorites would be a hybrid of these two lists, based on raw liking alone (#1 is #1 purely because I like it more than #2, and so on).

What do you think?

Negima OAD Episode 2 Trailer Released!!!

(click the link for the trailer)

I went to go check out the Negima OAD website and I found that the site had finally been updated after 21 days… and I found they had just recently posted up thr offical trailer for the second episode of the 2nd OAD series, which is just great news! it certainly made my day!

And it seems as though the art and animation will be alot better compared to the previous episode. More than likely because it seems as though SHAFT has got SOME of thier issues fixed, or at least a little bit … Though I’ll admit that I’m a bit disapointed that the episode won’t cover but what seems like 3-4 chapters of the manga… I really wonder how thier going to make it up to the begining of the Negi VS. Rankan battle if they continue to move the story in the OAD along at this pace. The episode starts right off where the previous OAD left off if you’ve read the manga/compared to the manga.

And I’ve orderd this OAD and it should ship out about 4 days-a week to ship out once it’s released.

And has anyone else heard about the new Negima Guide book coming out?

Castle In The Air

“Castle In The Air”

Disclaimer: I don’t own anything except this story of mine. Vampire Knight, as we all know, rightfully belongs to Hino Matsuri-sensei.

Rima is wandering around the palace’s garden. She is troubled, nonetheless, her mind is occupied with earlier’s conversation with her parents. She doesn’t understand why she’s going through such things in her life; but what can she do about it? She’s the first princess–the one and only to be exact–and the daughter of Kuran Kuran “>Yuuki together with Kuran Kaname. They’re both purebloods, the highest rank in the vampire society; although she wonders, is she one as well? Surely she is, but that question always pops out in her mind whenever she feels insecure. Unsure of what to do, she perished the thought. Her mind travelled back in earlier’s time.

- ‘ C h e m i c a l B i n d i n g s ‘ -

“What did you say?” Rima was shocked, she couldn’t ask any other questions than that. She clearly wasn’t expecting to hear such things coming from her mother’s mouth. “Impossible,” she mutters in a sad tone.

“It’s not like we wanted it, Rima.” Kaname tries to persuade her. True, they’re not the ones behind all of the recent happenings. They didn’t want it also, he thought. Looking at their position, their kingdom, their land, everything as a matter of fact, someone’s hindering the ways of their ruling – not to mention, they’re in the state of bankruptcy. The likes of goods and such are slowly disappearing. “I’m sorry.”

“I know,” she says, finally, surprising her parents. “You’re not the ones at fault; this is bound to happen sooner or later. But, I didn’t expect it to be this soon.” She looks directly in their eyes, her blue pearls showing no hint of emotion, only coldness. “Let’s end this discussion now; I’m tired.” Rima turns around, her back facing them, and begins to walk away. Her face covered with her bangs making her expression unknown. But, tears were spotted to be running down from her once soft eyes.

“I’m so sorry,” she heard Yuuki apologise before she even disappears from their sight. This only made it worse for her. When Rima had reached the door, she broke a run for it, not wanting to stay any longer with their presence, and mostly, not wanting to be seen crying.

- ‘ C h e m i c a l B i n d i n g s ‘ -

‘They may have their reasons, I just know it. But…’ she stops from her thinking for a while before resuming once more, ‘I still can’t accept the fact I have to get married.’ She sighs, looking at the starry night sky. So peaceful, always twinkling and bright, just like the Rima in the past. When she thought of this, she shakes her head, trying to erase the memory she wants to forget.

“Useless,” she says in a low voice. “I want to forget, but memories just keeps coming back to haunt me.” She looks at her surroundings; the trees, plants, and flowers around her. Beautiful, she thinks. But somehow, she gets tired of it, and doesn’t quite like it. She then decides to go back to her room while deep in thought. She wants to clear her mind–to have some peace and quiet, for instance. Maybe the wandering decreased her worries, after all.

Vélemény: Érdekes, kicsit a Kurozukára jellemző nyomasztó, sötét hangulatot áraszt, emellett átlagon felül elvont. Érdekesnek tűnik.

Kanokon Manatsu no Daishanikusai

Kanokon OVA :S.

Kiddy Girl-and

Eljött a Kiddy Grade várva várt folytatása.

Winter Sonata

Egyébként egész vicces, úgyhogy a fiatalabb korosztálynak valószínúleg tetszeni fog.

Ennyi. Természetesen más animék is indultak az őszi szezonban, de egyelőre ezeket tartottam említésre méltónak. Lehet válogatni.

Darker than Black - Ryuusei no Gemini - Premières impressions

Nendo Lily Arrives, Abused Immediately.

Lily just doesn’t get a break! We all know what it can feel like when we’re not wanted. It looks like Saber does too. More after the jump!

What a mysteriously shaped package! e2046 delivers again with awesome bubble wrap. But why is this Nendoroid box shape so oddly sized?

Finally, after some unwrapping we find… Tupperware? I’ve never seen Tupperware used as packing material before. I don’t think the other daughters have either, except maybe Rin. But then again, she’s unique.

Sugoi! Saber Lily has arrived! Why does this all look so familiar?!

Looks like Rin is the only one enjoying the bed of bubble wrap.

Nagi: “Get yer foot offa my face!!!”

Upon arrival, it seems the other daughters don’t like Saber Lily all that much. Maybe because she’s the 11th Nendoroid I own, so it kinda makes her the odd one out. Hamsters are like that too – they don’t like outsiders.

In the end, no matter how powerful you are, sometimes sheer numbers will overwhelm you. Saber was told right away where she belonged in this group.

Konata: “Look! A rare drop!”

Everyone: “ha ha ha, Konata is so silly sometimes!”

Saber: …

Thrown into the bottom feeder shelf, poor Saber Lily is left to fend for space with Ashe, Sephiroth and the newly disgruntled Uesagi… wait, disgruntled? Why?

Because Saber Lily has won a rightful place next to my computer monitor. She couldn’t beat out Asuka and her motorcycle though.

So that reminds me – This version of Saber Lily had a photoshop too!

Click the image for a bigger pic!

Of course, here’s a youtube video of it being made! It only took 41 minutes!

And if you’re worried about little Lily, it’s okay. She wasn’t in the bottom feeder for long before I rescued her, and let her join the others. She’s still being ignored by them, but they’ll eventually get along, I just know it!

Actually a bit late now, since the anime has progress to episode 29 and introduced the last of the main players. Lots of developments left, right and center, so I’m really looking forward to the next part…but here’s my little look at the series so far.

Whilst I’ve been spamming about Bakemonogatari and the Cross Game manga elsewhere, I’ve also been religiously following the anime adaptation of the latter. It’s very unusual for me to watch a series that’s so distinctly shonen, but Adachi-sensei is such a master of realistic and subtle high-school relationships that I was seriously considering this for anime of the year, even though it won’t be finished until Spring next year. Not so much in terms of romantic relationships (although I can see why Azuma is becoming more content – Ichiyo and Junpei’s relationship is funny and kinda sweet!), but rather for the dynamic between Koh and the people close to him – his parents, the Tsukishimas (especially Momiji) and Akaishi. The development of Azuma, tied to his brother and his interaction with the rest of the Seishu team, especially Koh, is also spot on.

What I do not particularly like, however, is how the anime has handled Koh and Aoba’s relationship. Some moments add to the impact of the manga, such as when Koh chides Aoba with a long, firm look when she snaps at Momiji for her warm reception of him. No words are exchanged until Koh breaks the silence to ask for a pot to cook with, but Aoba understands that she had gone too far in what she said. However, some additions, such as Aoba asking Koh if he knew who the center fielder in Wakaba’s dream was (episode 17), feel extremely out of place. The important point there was Aoba being surprised that Koh knew about Wakaba’s last dream, and that he was working to fulfil it. Why would Aoba, who still hasn’t really accepted Koh’s relationship with her sister (this is implied a fair bit later in the manga), be more concerned about Koh knowing that she was in the dream, as opposed to learning a bit more about how much he cared for her sister?

The other bemusing change occurs two episodes later, with young Aoba carving a replacement symbol (of Koh and Wakaba’s love) for the one she scratched out. Young Aoba did not accept Koh and Wakaba as a couple, so I do not see why she would have carved the replacement, even if Wakaba had passed away. Both manga and anime have her telling Momiji to let Koh go on his trip to “the hill around back” by himself, because she knows what he is looking for and how important Wakaba’s memory is to him. However, having Koh need directions has the effect, intended or not, of diluting his love for Wakaba – even if he has forgotten exactly where the tree was (understandable because he hadn’t been there for about 7 years), he could have just kept looking until he eventually found it, leaving all the subtleties of this trip intact. My interpretation of those scenes in the manga is that they contribute to Aoba’s acceptance that Koh is worthy of having Wakaba’s love, so these changes seem to be far too focussed on developing Aoba and Koh’s relationship.

Whilst I am quite a purist in some respects, I really don’t mind some of the other additions to Cross Game, such as the extra episodes devoted to women’s baseball and Aoba’s decision to stay with the team. But the scenes I’ve mentioned above add development that is rather out of place to Koh and Aoba’s relationship, indicating that Aoba started accepting Koh as someone she could respect way earlier than she actually did. Whether her actions and reactions (and Koh’s) are linked to an underlying romantic interest is yet to be confirmed – there are arguments both for and against. Thus, adding fuel to the fire by way of such additional scenes makes it seem quite forced. Even if Adachi-sensei has approved the anime changes (and he very well might have), I much prefer the subtlety of the manga.

Aesthetically, the production occassionally shows signs of lack of time or resources, especially in the faces of the characters. However, as I’ve said before, the art isn’t something I am particularly concerned about anyway. On the other hand, the seiyuu – Irino Miyu, Tomatsu Haruka, Sakurai Takahiro et al – are doing an excellent job with their characters, and new developments from here on should give them even more to work with. So, whilst I’ve removed Cross Game for “Anime of the Year” contention for some of the above reasons, I’ll definitely keep watching it.

p.s. “Anime of the Year” is giving me a headache…because at least two of the major contenders may not be finished by the end of this year, even though their tv broadcasts are over…

p.p.s. And especially after that last episode (29), I’m really hoping that people aren’t following SubSmith. They make far too many mistakes in the translation, resulting not only in the humour disappating, but also “creating” confusing misinterpretions of dialogue that is important for character or relationship development.

Naruto Manga Chapter 42

Rei – Nol/Tidak ada: Dipakai oleh Pein.
Seiryū – Naga Biru/Hijau – Dewa Timur dan Musim Semi: Dipakai oleh Deidara.
Byakko – Harimau Putih – Dewa Barat dan Musim Gugur: Dipakai oleh Konan.
Suzaku – Merah darah – Dewa Selatan dan Musim Panas: Dipakai oleh Itachi Uchiha.
Genbu – Kura-Kura – Dewa Utara dan Musim Dingin: Dipakai oleh Zetsu.
Nanju – Bintang Selatan: Dipakai oleh Kisame Hoshigaki.
Hokuto – Bintang Utara: Dipakai oleh Kakuzu.
Santai – Tiga Tingkatan: Dipakai oleh Hidan.
Gyokunyo – Virgo: Sekarang dipakai oleh Tobi, dulu dipakai oleh Sasori.
Lima negara utama

Happy times indeed.

Kimi ni Todoke (eller “Reaching you”…

Skillnaden…

Kobato. 2 : The start of an Adventure

I wanna be the very best like no one ever was...

The naive girl Kobato continues her adventure in the new world. Collecting the scarred hearts of people and keeping them save inside her bottle. As for this episode, we’re gonna collect our first badge scarred heart!Kobato is admiring her bottle she received last time by passing Puppy-san’s test. She wonders when the bottle will fill up, Puppy-san vein pops and then blasts Kobato away saying…

Still can't get enough of it

After the opening, Puppy-san jumps on the see-saw asking Kobato what she has to do to get her wish granted. The team building seems to work as Kobato answers his questions. Then Puppy-san tells her that she shouldn’t talk to him when they’re around people since stuffed animals (freaky english language sure knows how to screw up a cute design) don’t talk in this world. It would be weird for her to talk to something that doesn’t answer back. Kobato wonders why stuffed animals don’t talk in this world, eventually Puppy-san gets pissed again and shouts that she should just get to work. Kobato jumps up, making Puppy-san fall down the see-saw. Result :

Grow***** uses Flamethrower

Kobato starts running around town scaring people by asking if they need to be healed or helped. Ofcourse the people get away from her quickly. Some kids call out for her to help her with playing “kick the can”. Our retarded-moe excepts the request just like a retarded-moe should and gets abused like a retarded-moe should as well.

it's unfair in 2D

A while later when Kobato checks the bottle, she notices that nothing happened with it and it’s still as empty as before. Puppy-san reasons that kicking a can can’t heal anyone’s heart and that Kobato just got tricked by them.

Then do something for the NEETs running around

Then she reasons that no one being hurt is actually a good thing, since it means that no one is sad. Puppy-san sighs wondering where her positive way of thinking is coming from.

On a second try in walking around the city looking for people, a man suddenly offers Kobato a pack of tissues. You might think this is strange, but it is actually pretty common in Japan for them to share those out for free. Japanese are really attached to their hygiene, they’re the ones with the flashy water cannon toilets afterall! Anyway, Kobato gladly accepts them and thinks the man is really a wonderful person. The man tells her he’s actually having trouble sharing them out to people and still has a whole box of them left. Dobato replies…

Now try to make money out of them!

Now you're helping the NEET community!

Puppy-san asks what she’s gonna do with them now. Kobato replies that now it is her time to start sharing the wonderful things with people. She starts sharing them out at random people in the streets, the people are kind of bothered and again start running away. Kobato suddenly trips over her own feet and accidently bumps into someone. That someone seems to be no one less then mister Cool.

Mr. Cool acting Cool

Kobato gets a flashback of what happened last time when they met. Then Mr. Cool tells her to gather all the tissues on the floor, then walks away. Kobato wants to thank him (don’t ask me why she wants to…) and follows him. She arrives at a daycare center with some Poke children playing there. Suddenly a blanket from the rooftop gets lose and flies into Kobato’s face. A woman and some kids run over to help to help the poor being and take away the blanket.

Daycare lady : Sakaya-sensei

Sakaya tells Kobato it’s busy and she has to take care of the laundry too. Kobato gets a ping! moment and asks if it’s possible for her to work and help with them. After getting pressured Sakaya accepts Kobato request.

HAPPY~

Kobato starts with handing over the box of tissues as a token of her gratitude. Inside the building, the kids introduce themselves to Kobato. One of them is called Toshihiko, he asks for Kobato’s name. Kobato replies and they all start laughing at her name, the boy wonders if her father’s name is Ou-bato (mostly used as an honorific).  Kobato looks a bit down when she can’t remember her father’s name, Toshihiko takes her hand while the others are still laughing. He asks if she doesn’t have a father, Kobato answers ‘tabun’ meaning ‘probably’. The boy’s hand was shaking after that and he looked rather sad.  Sakaya then appears and tells the kids not to trouble Kobato too much. Kobato asks if she can help with something, but Sakaya replies that keeping the children busy is more than enough.

One of the kids asks her to play the organ, but Kobato has to turn down the request since she can’t play. However, she tells, she can dance together with them. The kid runs away and suddenly drags someone inside asking him to play the organ. That person is…

Mr. Cool! who isn't so cool right now...

Mr.Cool isn’t so happy with seeing Kobato again and asks her why she’s been following him around. Kobato tells him that she only wanted to thank him. He coldly accepts her thanks and tells her to go home now. Kobato refuses since she’s helping out Sakaya right now.  He tells her if she can’t even play the organ, she’s…

Reality bites

Sakaya (I always tend to type Sakuya for some reason) passes by and asks if they became friends already. They instantly correct her, saying it’s a no-no. The children interrupt them and want Mr. Cool to play the organ now. He starts playing the organ and Kobato has to start dancing with the children. Mr. Cool immediately comments on Kobato’s dancing skills.

Kobato surrounded by evil influences...

But Kobato doesn’t wanna give in to him and continues dancing like a robot, to the amusement of the children ofcourse.

After the break, the children are left sleeping in one of the bedrooms. Meanwhile, Kobato, Sakaya and Mr. Cool are having a tea time in the staff room. Sakaya tells that this place is getting old and that there’re lesser children coming to their nursery now that there’s a new one nearby. Mr. Cool who’s back in cool attitude tells them there’s no use in just worrying about it.

Oh right... that's Mr. Cool's name

Sakaya gets up and bows telling she’s really thankful to Kobato for helping her out. Kobato replies it’s really nothing and that Puppy-san would usually get angry if she’d see her play around. Then she realizes that Puppy-san is gone and realizes that divine punishment is gonna be passed onto her.

It's the acopolypse!

She runs out but then stops and asks if she can come back tomorrow. Mr. Cool, however, tells Sakaya that she shouldn’t believe Kobato that easily since they know almost nothing about her. Kobato wants to argue but doesn’t find the words to counter him. She eventually says she’s trying to find out about it herself. Sakaya notices that Kobato is getting sad and comforts her by saying she’s happy to have her, but she can’t really pay her. Kobato cheers up and tells she’s happy enough just to be to help them.

When Kobato is about to leave the nursery, Mr. Cool stops her and tells her that if she’s only coming to the place because of pity or self sacrifice, then she’s better off staying away. Kobato tells him she doesn’t think like that at all, but before being able to say more, he walks off. Then a familiar voice calls out for Dobato…

I don't think anyone would pick you up though...

Now I also prefer the term 'stuffed' animal for him

After apologizing a lot, Kobato checks her bottle. But again, nothing has happened, it’s still empty. Kobato is feeling down saying that afterall she was just annoying them and being a bother. Kobato starts reasoning that there are a lot more different people than she had thought of before. People who are scarred and unscarred, unscarred people who want to and don’t want to be healed. And Kobato doesn’t know which ones she’s dealing with. Puppy-san munching on a bit of meat asks her what she’s planning to do now. He tells her it doesn’t matter whether they want or don’t want to be healed, they should be healed by Kobato.

That's the smile I want to see.

Later that evening, all children are heading home. Kobato suddenly notices Toshihiko sitting on a swing. Kobato asks if he’s not going home, he replies he isn’t. Kobato looks a bit surprised, then she asks if he likes swings. He tells her that he doesn’t really like that a lot, but he has no choice since his mother is working really hard for him now. Kobato smiles and tells him that’s amazing. Toshihiko is surprised that Kobato isn’t saying bad things about his mother like the others do.

A flashback shows Toshihiko waiting for his mother on several days and other parents pitying him because his mother is always late.

Don't worry, there's always adaption

Toshihiko tells Kobato his mum is really working hard for him since the divorce and he really believes in her. After his emotional speech, Kobato starts clapping in admiration for his mother.

Isn't she cute ;O;

The boy starts crying and hugs Kobato. Kobato doesn’t know how to react, she asks if he’s hurt somewhere. The boy shakes his head and keeps hugging her tightly.

Later that night…

Kobato notices her bottle is filled with a scarred heart fragment.

The Boulder Badge!

Puppy-san tells her that it’s because of Toshihiko. The boy was happy because Kobato praised his mother and that she was kind to him. She hugs the bottle wondering if she was really kind back there. Puppy-san tells her that she should keep on doing what she did with Toshihiko to get her bottle filled. Kobato answers that she’ll do her best to keep up and collect more scarred hearts. Puppy-san isn’t happy with how she’s naming them and tells her to call the fragments ‘candy’.  Then Puppy-san takes out a brush and gives Kobato her score for the day…

FOR MOE-NESS!

_

Thoughts :

The first part was amusing to watch eventhough nothing really happened in it. It just showed how Kobato is being too naive about everything.

The second part and then especially the part with Toshihiko’s memories was really great. It gave me a warm feeling inside and moved me quite a bit, mostly thanks to the music playing at that time too. Really nicely done in my opinion. I hope we get to see more complex problems from now on, this one was a real good warm up for me. The feeling of the series and the music mixed with Kobato’s naive behavior might make this series similar to Clannad. Well, at least it’s giving me the same feeling, whether it’ll become a masterpiece or not is yet to be seen.

Rating for the episode 9,5/10

Voltron at 25

I heed the calls of my limited readership. I am a man of the people. You spoke and I listened. To break up the monotony of my posts on nostalgia, music, education, and various other technology things that interest me, I bring you this.

Voltron is 25 years old.

Yes, little Michael Gallagher would rush home after St. Dominic’s School in Youngstown, Ohio, and sit in front of the TV watching G.I. Joe, Voltron, and Robotech. And then I would run outside with my siblings and try to form a lion by standing on each other. In our Catholic school clothes, much to my mother’s chagrin.

So there you have it. Please do visit this site because someone has not only upheld the dream of Voltron, but indeed embellished it. And who in their right mind would not want this t-shirt?

Dynatherms? Intercells? Megathrusters? Ahh, back when science was nondescript jibber jabber.

For those who just can’t seem to get enough, it does seem that there will be a live action version of Voltron.

Will I see it? Absolutely not. I will keep my childhood right where it belongs. In some backyard in Ohio. In matching pants and shirt. In polished shoes. In fear.

Yamato Nadeshiko Shinshi Henge

Umineko Naku Koro Ni ep 15: Haruhi and Beatrice

i somehow remembered how irritated i was with haruhi before i began to like her a bit and this episode made me compare haruhi with beato. they share a lot of similarities, the most common would be of a bored God who messes people’s lives just to alleviate their boredom. they also like to stuff their own opinions on people in the assumption that it’s what they want. they also command people to do their wishes and are capable of humiliating people beyond the threshold of restraint.

but if you’ll ask me which is the more likable between the two, i’d still go for beato. no, it’s not about the laugh this time. it’s about capability. the reason why beato kills, humiliates, and pisses people around is because she’s a lonely witch. compare that to a high schooler that doesn’t even know she have god-like powers. both of them are bored, it’s a given, but beato’s reason for messing up people is more valid that haruhi. for one, beato can mess with people because SHE CAN and she will impose her powers to others. haruhi on the other hand doesn’t know what she can do but is able to get what she wants because others know and are afraid of what she is capable of. a tyrannical princess is different from a spoiled one and haruhi falls under the spoiled category which is why it irritates me much. ever since i read the translated novels, i can’t bring myself to like her completely.

but if there’s one thing they share in common and that i respect the most, they are willing to ‘move forward’ in their principles of life. sure they value their pride and self worth over anything else but who are we to argue? it’s who they are that makes them haruhi and beato, love it or like it, it’s your call. though i think the concept of ‘moving forward’ would’ve been ok if they didn’t involve people but like i said, who are we to argue?

but if there’s one thing i liked in this episode overall, it’s how deep beato and battler’s relationship are. over the previous episodes we see them bickering at each other yet it hardly displayed the level of respect that they had. though i wonder what comes after this episode. will battler reconcile with beato or will beato have something cruel in store for battler? after all, beato is a sly fox. the emotions she showed here may much as well be an act. but for now, i’ll believe blindly on what developed on this episode.

Why This Recession Might Be Good For Anime Fans

Anime as an industry has evolved from being invested to one property, into a popcorn type thing where: one title is made, tossed, and a new one is made. People like to picture this as not milking a franchise and having new material, but as you can see when Haruhi had only one season they still milked that franchise to death. Now don’t mistake investment in making new spin offs or sequels from the same franchise, which is an investment, which is different from milking, which is nothing more except churning random shitting merchandise that is worth nothing.

Now that the recession has hit every corner of the earth, we see the anime industry shift from cranking so much new property, they decided to go sequel routes. You can see from fall list coming out though, a lot of them are sequels of franchise with cliffhangers, loose end, or fan demands. The studios did not ignore market research to exploit those series some more, and by no means is this milking a franchise; instead it is quenching fans thirst in the best way possible, and that is with new titles from those series.

Take for example “To Aru Kagaku no Railgun.” Is a spin off of the Index series, but the quality of the show so far has been quite high, and is still risky to invest into it. Since it is a recession it is still overall safer to invest in this then J.C. Staff doing a completely new series from an untested property. This gives the anime more exploitation business wise, and the fans are not left with only merchandise, and instead are given a new show. I think this is a win win situation, as before we were given new series left and right, then a ton of merchandise, which left me with a sense of no connection with the series. The new model leaves fans with a lot of time with a franchise, letting the overall series to have more recognition leading to more sales, and forcing fans not to shift there money to a new series, which can lead them to a different studio’s work.

The anime industry unlike before is playing it safe, and that may not be such a bad thing. Before was a time of experiment, where a model of 13 episodes, then new series worked well. Still as time went on it was not a safe investment for both fans and the company, and cheapen the property instead of giving it more value. Maybe a recession isn’t so bad after all.

Blade Of The Phantom Master - DVD Review

The coolness of the theatrical anime feature “Blade Of The Phantom Master” works not just because of its futurism but its mix of both in terms of story, style and integration. Bringing aspects of both traditional Japanese anime, CG 3D material and “Heavy Metal” style thinking into the mix, the movie, despite its basis in certain types of myths, lifts itself above its basic story material with definite flair. It starts out in the desert with a wandering man, a knight of sorts, with his services no longer required after the collapse of a country. It is the basis of any good western. You have a degregation of duty where he has given up on his usefulness and is ready to turn in the towel. It is a great story motif where redemption is necessary. This man is saved by the human spirit of a boy who gives him water. The kid is seeking to become an Amen-Osa which is almost prenatural knight with control of his own Phantom Army. The attack by a vicious bunch of barbarian cannibalistic sand dwelling monsters sets the tone. The difference in the anime is not just in its fluidity but also in its attitude. It has sarcasm and balls without being conventional or trite.

The awakening of Chen, who was the boy in the desert’s sweetheart, shows her to be an almost otherworldly warrior. She serves the new Amen-Osa as his Sando or servant. Some of the initial intentions like her standing over a grave as her cloak flitters against the dusk are simply iconic. You think of “The Gunslinger” but tinged with anime that offers a different depth. The center of the feature slows down a bit to establish the points using the element of silence to really key it in. Just as you think the film has lost its way, the fire begins to burn. The ending battle between Chen and Mari, a deadly tinged female assassin serving of the dark lord of the island, is great. The angle at the center of the story is that a whole area Amen-Osa and Chen travel to is an isle of the dead that isn’t blissfully aware that their souls have been taken. They are living in a dream world where life is what they want it to be. The essence of what needs to be taken down is understood. The motivation of the warlock however seems muddled.

One thing that is not muddled is The Phantom Army and the Amen-Osa’s use of guns. When both of them come into play, the film kicks into energetic overdrive that is only outdone by the Aeon Flux speed and rage of Chen when she gets going. The translation is pretty dead on across the board so the boys in this Japan/Korean co-production from 04 were on their game as was ADV who originally got the translation going with Funimation doing the completion.

The extras also give fans what they want to see. The CG to 3D shows the work being done in the office of the animation company. Things are not all in order and that is good. This is a completely creative enviroment where these people are making this production and it is great to see. They show how, for the Phantom Army, there was an original animation sketch that they built into the CG to show the transformation. There is even one point where it goes from CG animation into regular 2D and, even though I saw a slight change, I thought it beautiful that they did it. There are also examples of how they used the program Flame to create fire, spark, smoke and cinder shots in the background which really give the film a sense of depth, even though it is using raw footage. They soften the details and make it sing.

The storyboards to CG show a parallel form of vision that tends to show the translation in the wire frames. The production sketches are also undeniably detailed in terms of full 360 degree views of all the characters. The interviews wiith the cast are fairly by the book and predicates a studio system with the exception of Roni Park who plays the evil Mari. She says what she thinks and goes to work with it. She would tell her character to chill out (because she thinks Mari is too wound up) but also thinks that Mensu is the type of guy she would fall for but admits she would probably always be nagging him.

The two theatrical trailers are very good for the original release in Japan in 2004 because it has a true sense of scope. The TV spot hits this too but not as well. In terms of the trailers, the one that stands out is “Samurai 7″ definitely with its fusion of old school samurai and futuristic visuals and metaphors. “Afro Samurai: Resurrection” also still has a bad-ass coolness to it that cannot be matched. Because it comes out of nowhere with such a definition of style and scope, “Blade Of The Phantom Master” is a surprise of riches. Out of 5, I give it a 3 ½.

[UPDATE] 10-2-2009

Sad to say, I’ve been neglecting this blog. D= But, there hasn’t been much to add onto or write about – well, I COULD be working on the SCANDALpedia, but I’ll delve into that later this weekend. ;]

As for now, I’m doing MUCH work on the ~Scandalous~ gallery!! So be sure to check it out if you haven’t in a while, or at all! Here are some details on the updates:

-Added a page for SAKURA-CON pictures!!
-Added 30 some pics of Mami!!
-Added 20 some pics of Rina!!
-Added 50 some (?) pics of Haruna!!
-Added 20 some pics of Tomomi!!
-Added more to the ANIME section!!
-Massively updated the DISCOGRAPHY section, fixing the broken links and adding onto it with photos of the products!!
-And more!

So yeah, please be sure to check out the gallery if you haven’t [yet or ever]. You may notice at the top of the page a tab that says “~Gallery~”, but that only contains a link to the separate ~Scandalous~ gallery. Had to make an entirely separate blog/site for it~ ^_^

Here it is:
