PA Meets Another Online Pal!

Yesterday I met yet another person I know online.  That would be my Twitter pal Canageek! He is cute as a button and quite a gentleman as well! *grins* We had a lot of fun.

Initially, some pub grub for lunch.  Though, before nearly ordering drinks, we had to settle the outstanding issue of how he thought I wasn’t so wee, when indeed I really am.  I told him to feel me.  No, not like that! He was a bit shocked, and agreed with what I had said all along.  Then the entire issue of me needing to gain weight came up.  Minister Canageek: “Go tell it on the Mountain, you are preaching to the Leader of the Choir!”

We took lots of pictures with my camera, and the vast majority are extremely silly.  This is always how it works, anyway.  One person looks fine; the other person looks like a total twonk! We did get a few that turned out alright, though.

After bitching forever about how cold it was, I can not believe that we managed to walk around for the rest of the afternoon! Hither and yon…aimlessly wandering…however.  It wasn’t so aimless? We did actually do things: browsing in lots of shops, poking about, looking at whatever seemed to catch our attention (attention spans long enough, considering we both have AD(H)D.)

Most of the shops were bookstores (new and used), and that was just fine by me! But oh, dear.  Such temptation! I need to be restrained in bookstores! Canageek did a pretty good job of it (thanks hon, I owe you big time!) However, I was looking for a couple of things specifically.  I was so lucky in that I got close enough? Even better that it was used!

It’s a copy of the novel “Emmanuelle” by Emmanuelle Arsan. The entire reason for this, was because I have the first of the three Series’ of the Graphic Novels drawn by Guido Crepax.

Now, if you don’t care to click on those links, I shall try to explain and keep it brief.  I can’t make any promises on that.  Regular readers know I am verbose as hell (translation: rambly as fuck.)  Fuck.  Yes.  A weak segue, but nonetheless.

The written novel was published in 1959 according to Wiki, although my copy says 1967.  Hmmm.  Either way, holy FUCK! It’s basically about a woman’s sexual odyssey and whoo, does she ever take one! Alright, admittedly I haven’t “gone all the way,” as I only have the first copy of Crepax’s drawn versions.  Now, I have the novel, so I can at least pick up where I left off.

Still!

So, let’s move on to Crepax.  I had never heard of him, so I will confess that I am not an Art History Major or Museum Curator.  Far from it.  But I like him, so good enough.  After seeing some of his work, I think it’s amazing! My copy (simply named “Emmanuelle I/1″), also includes a few examples of his other drawings.

ASIDE: Let me also add (no shit?) the Emmanuelle Series’ and a lot of his work are not really for minors??? *rolls eyes*

Now, apart from the Emmanuelle-related that I have seen in my book, wow.  His work with his panels? You need to just stop and absorb the overall.  Then you can study a bit more of the content, and then move onto the detail of the content.  So cool.  Also, his drawing is almost paradoxical in nature.  It’s deceptively simple, but upon really looking at it, quite detailed and/or complex.  A feast for the eyes?

There is one drawing that has nothing to do with Emmanuelle in the book and I just love it! Purely for the above reasons, and also for its angular lines.  If books weren’t such sacred objects to me, I’d tear the page out and frame it! I could always make a copy of it?

Also, speaking of “Sacred Books and Texts,” I made some references to being a “zombified,” Jane Austen character on Twitter earlier.  If you read that and it made no sense to you, some people are “bastardizing” her work and other historical novels.  Yes, a sort of “Horror/Literary Mashup.”  I won’t link to any of that stuff, but we thought it was hysterical.

Ah! One thing that I can guarantee none of you know, is that I own Canada.  Yes, it’s true.  I bought a platinum pendant in the shape of an alien from outer space.  As it turned out, its value was off the charts! As a result, I then purchased the Royal Canadian Mint.  It was quite a bargain beyond what immense, personal wealth I held back for myself.  Since I took over the Royal Canadian Mint, I re-worked our entire, economic system.  From there, really quite simple after that!

Imagine.  All in one day.  I forgot to mention the purchase of the pendant and the country’s economy outside of the bookstore browsing.  Oops.  Glad I remembered that!  I am now working on all of our Foreign and Global Interests.  Hey, we were kind of busy yesterday.  I thought anything beyond our Domestic could wait until today.

My guilty pleasure? Kanokon.

That's my "reaction to moe" face

( God I wish there was a figure of that kid.)

Aside from Kouta’s cuteness though,   I just love how unabashed the show is.  It knows you’re watching it for fanservice, so it’ll give it to you, in abundance. No coy artsy fartsy attitudes or pretentious self awareness, just pure, shameless fanservice.  It’s an obvious, “I wish this were me” fantasy, the writer of the light novels even admitted in an interview that he just wants those bitches all over his balls, but you know what?    It’s honest, stupid fun, and I can appreciate that.

Well, that and shota rape.

Two Favored Space Opera Series

One of the more annoying Leftist comebacks is “you don’t have any better to offer”. They pretend they are adults, thus focused on a solution, so make us the challenge that we do nothing but harp on their ‘good works’.

In the case of Avatar, here’s what is better, if better can be measured in the 1000th percentage range.

Starship Operators

Legend of Galactic Heroes

And there’s nothing like a tragic love story in a hybrid sci-fi Westerner. You may have heard another story set in the same mold: Firefly.

Third times a charm...

It’s Christmas everywhere (w00t!) in the world, so what does Kadokawa give it’s loyal money givers fans?

The HQ version of the Haruhi Suzumiya trailer.

Yes, this is the third time I’ve made a post for it, and I don’t care.

Oh, and if you get a chance to read the comments, there is some noob war over The Disappearance of Yuki-chan manga and how that relates to The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya light novel.

Before you ask, it’s a retelling WITHOUT Haruhi, nor Kyon’s memories.

[TIL] Whispers of the Heart - The Dreary versus Fantasy (Worlds).

The kids, and the cat.

So I’ve watched Whispers of the Heart in a Hayao Miyazaki focused film festival of sorts last Friday (along with Porco Rosso, I’ve watched all the other films they had there previously), and something bothered me by Whispers of the Heart, well, a couple of things.

There will be a certain amount of spoilers, be advised.

The first is that it had a “point”, a moral, a lesson it had tried to pass, when I think it’d have worked better as a “Slice of Life” story that just showcases something. Porco Rosso on the other hand was cute, but it was rambling and a bit directionless.

Whispers of the Heart follows Shizuku Tsukihima, a girl who loves reading books, at her senior year of junior high school. In a way, she lives in the world of imagination, reading books voraciously, and fantasizing about the boy whose name appears before hers in many of the books she loves.

By the by, she is a junior high school student, and while some aspects of her and her classmates seem a bit off in age, as in, some fit high schoolers better, and some actually fit elementary schoolers (and even 4th-5th graders at that), on the whole, it seemed fitting, the behaviour, which meant quite a bit. I hate it when films totally butcher how younger people behave for the sake of cliches.

Anyway, Tsukihima lives in the world of fantasies and would-bes, day-dreaming her way through life. As such, when she has some run-ins with the dreary life of preparing for the high school entry exams, before her confrontation with her parents, I thought the point of all the times she was asked for chores and she failed to meet them was not in order to have a build-up to a confrontation (that fizzled out, as a confrontation), but to showcase the lively world of imagination versus the dreary everyday life.

Anyway, there was something that really annoyed me at one of the moments of the film, and which was originally the title of this post, the “It only happens in stories!” fallacy. Not that some things don’t happen just in stories (because they do), and not discounting the fact many of us export to the real life what we learn from films. No, my point is different, and I’d use a short story to help get it across.

I sometimes dream that I am flying, and all that I need in order to fly is just “to let go”, of gravity’s hold on me, of my fear of flying, and up I go. A couple of months ago I had a dream, and I said to myself “You can only do it in dreams, but this is not a dream, so let’s see if it works,” and then it worked, and I was flying, and I was congratulating myself on how I was flying outside the dream, when before it only happened in dreams.

Likewise, Tsukihima tells herself, or someone tells her, that a certain something she wishes for, or that she desires, only happens in stories. And then it obviously happens to her, which is a problem, because this is a story, she is in a story, one that we experience. I find this a bit problematic, not just because it’s simplistic and, well, an ironic lie, of sorts.
I also find it problematic because the target audience for this film, and who often hear this from dramas and other stories (“It only happens in films”), where the actors are flesh and blood, are younger kids, or people who may be caught off-guard and who will then tell themselves this is a “truth-telling film” for knowing and saying some things only happen in films, and then it proceeds to give them a message, something that only happens in films, and then they’ll take it, or are more likely to.

The moral of the story? Work hard for what you believe in, you might not get it, but you need to find out by putting in effort if that’s what you really want (Seiji, the boy she likes), and whether you actually have a talent for it (Tsukihima herself). Of course, you might get a negative result on either, but neither of our protagonists do, at least at this time. Not to mention they’re getting engaged, or promise themselves to one another before they’re out of junior high. How romantic, how sappy, how…. storylike.

If we put aside the silly moral, and my slight beef with the above, it’s a good and enjoyable movie. Miyazaki was more in charge of the in-story sequences, and there are sequences, both in the story Tsukihima pens, and her own discovery of the rare goods shop that quite resemble Alice in Wonderland. The in-story is a bit silly, a bit empty, and not fully fleshed out, but then again, we don’t get much of it. Of course, it’s easier to come up with a dream-scape of sorts when you only need to come up with 2-3 minutes’ worth.

Score: 7.2 Kids in love, who love reading books. An enjoyable film.

Death Note tonight

This is what I feel like...

As said in previous posts, I was/am planning to do a voice/video chat when Death Note is airing in Adelaide, Australia to others watching it. I started it last week and was going to continue it to this week and so on, but I’m regretful to say that I have a really bad head cold and can’t really talk, so this week I’m giving it a miss.

Although, if you live in Australia, please don’t forget that Death Note IS airing tonight at 11:30pm, watch it to support the industry in Australia!

Kekkaishi (Volume 8), by Yellow Tanabe

Yoshimori and Tokine are caught in a trap, and without Gen as backup. Their Kekkaishi powers have been nullified and all that remains are the abilities of two School-Aged teens.

Story overview:

Tokine executes a plan of action that uses herself as bait. Not on board with this is Yoshimori, whose main goal is to keep Tokine safe. Instead he comes up with a better plan (amazing for him), which destroys the barrier restricting their Kekkaishi powers.

Meanwhile Gen—after mostly recovering from his injuries—nearly transforms into his full ayakashi form. Thankfully for him a man named Hiba (as we discover was put in charge of watching Gen) puts a stop to this. Later we are shown Gen’s childhood and how he goes berserk and almost kills his beloved sister. (With his brothers and parents the way they were, there’s no wonder Gen acts the way he does.) Thankfully his sister didn’t die, but Gen finds himself taken away by Masamori to learn to control his power.

Back in the present time we rejoin our Kekkaishi duo. The battle goes on until all but the head ayakashi, Kaguro, is left. He himself actually kills the last ayakashi since he didn’t like the creature’s tactics. Walking away, he decides to come back and try again another day. Once the two Kekkaishi meet up with Gen, they are thankful to find the boy hasn’t been kicked out of the Shadow Organization.

My thoughts:

It was interesting to learn how there are two types of half-ayakashi: (1) Parasitic type, which can only alter a specific body part, and (2) Integrated type, which can totally transform, but in doing so they turn into a complete ayakashi and lose control. Gen is the latter form. Interesting story for sure. There’s always a new mystery unfolding and great character interactions: still a page turner even in its eight volume.

Things to consider:

Same rating as the others: thirteen plus and targeted mainly towards boys. No sexual situations or major cursing. Just typical manga violence that appeals mostly to boys (and yes, to me as well).

Opportunities for discussion:

Gen’s story shows how he was an unloved child. The only one that cared for him was his sister, and a misunderstanding made him think she betrayed him, which causes him to lose all hope. Ask your teen what their hopes are in life, and if they ever feel like they are totally lost. Then remind them—even though they may no longer like to hear it—that you will always love them no matter what. This means more than they may let on.

Past reviews in this series:

Shin Tokyo - Manga and Merchandise - December 09

Well, I must say, the haul this month is quite good, Lucky Star, Soul Eater AND Akira (reprint), I am liking this. Although $16 for Lucky Star is a bit overpriced, as is the lack of the Hardcover edition of The Sighs of Haruhi Suzumiya novel, yet at least you can pick it up offline. This caught my eye though:

Yes you can see correctly, those are SENZU BEANS! You can pick them up for 5 bucks. Must get some on my next trip, that and the Soul Eater stuff from last month.

You can look at everything here.

Planned or Unplanned

So I was talking the other day with a friend about tv series, and how sometimes it annoys me when there are dead end plots that go nowhere. Specifically I was thinking about Melrose and when Laura Leighton was on 90210 for like, six episodes or something, and then her character just disappeared. Or that one weird episode of 7th Heaven in which a crooked contractor feigns injury while renovating the garage apartment to rip off the Camdens and Annie is all “I will fight you on this!” and then nothing was ever mentioned again. Clearly plots they threw at the wall that didn’t stick.

These always annoy me, despite the fact that in real life events happen that don’t necessarily lead anywhere all the time. Then again, if I wanted real life I wouldn’t need a tv at all.

Initially I floated Lost as a show with a plan before I realized it too is littered with lost (heh) plots, like Libby and Ana Lucia or, more gallingly (since AL & L were apparently let go because of bad behavior filing in Hawaii) Shannon and Boone. Why were they even there? It really puts a damper in my faith that Lost has an overarching plan, in spite of its assurances.

I have similar issues with BSG. Don’t tell me “They have a plan” unless they have a plan.

At the end of the day, the only shows I can think of that seem airtight to me are Veronica Mars and some anime series (which are, presumably, planned out in the manga?), though I’m always ready to hear more.

I haven’t finished the Sopranos yet, but it seems to be a pretty tight show thus far (midway through S5) and possibly Big Love, although it’s hard to tell with series that are ongoing.

Manga training + Rants + tips

So remember i showed you this pic?:

http://fatesofashe.wordpress.com/2009/12/09/manga-training-excuses/

I finally finished it so lemme show you the process… to the final product ;)

Ironically the editor and i got confused which was the starting point was it the top left or top right to be first panel? Are we reading traditional or American system. The difference is huge depending on your reading style. So minutes later we decided that the top right will be the initial frame and we went off from there, a few modifications on the top left panel and a change of posture in the bottom left resulted in this:

So he liked that and the penciling came out fine. A couple of small mistakes but i overridden them:

Ok other than the obvious right hand glove on bottom left which i just realised when i uploaded, the major mistake here was with the explosion, so after serveral talks we fixed that and a small fix with the glove in panel 3. The final “All green” is this one:

The explosion is much better in this one.

So enough with explanations tips! :D

1) with drawing energy try a couple of flicks here and there in the initial draft, and when you finally pencil it, see if it looks good, i tend to take a couple of days drawing energy cause i am not used to it yet.

2) Speedlines help with pretty much anything in action. For a particular motion or movement i recommend French Curves, if you dont have one i suggest you go get some. It cost me 13 bucks in Australia it may be cheaper or more expensive where you live, they help with speed lines and also general shape of movement very very useful than free hand and much more cleaner.

3) Set Squares help with blades construction and stuff. most importantly speed lines.

4) Characters: Spam whatever you liek generally if your a reader you will be flicking through 16 pages really really quickly and reading the speech bubbles the art has to flow rather than be noticable, if you can do both then your very good, i cant do that yet :( so most of my stuff is very simple, but i guess the important parts must be detailed, so pay attention to em.

5) What i have found when drawing explosions in the last panel is that you can start out with clouds then add small bits to the outside, if your not sure use a reference. Small clouds (Sausages as my editor told me) should be added to create a much more realistic explosion and use speed lines as required, but don’t over do it.
Lastly i should probably mention here that I need an inker i can work with, if you think you can ink send me an email with your linearts :D . Me and the editor are working on small projects atm and would appreciate an inker and a colorist (well just an inker would be nice atm) I dont really want to do the whole thing manually cause that is a fair bit of pressure. So if anyone is interested, fire me an email at:

gunblade7777777@gmail.com

or

fatesofashe@gmail.com

i check the first one more often :)

An Unintentional Yuri Kick

Disclaimer: None of the following are rated H though apparently the first was based on the story line of an H game.

Nearly all of the animes I have viewed recently have unintentionally been very very, oh so very, yuri.  Not that its a bad thing, most yuri based shows are hilarious because of the girl/girl match that always goes array.  Its more the realization that every show I put on ends that way.  The last non-yuri show I have seen was Tayutama~kiss on my deity which included your typical girl/guy/female-embodiment-of-a-god love triangle.

Yami to Boshi to Hon no Tabibito (The Traveller Yami, the book and the hat).

Nutshell: Girl falls for girl (Eve) who is really on the of the great gods that created all the worlds.  Girl goes looking for Eve who mysteriously disappeared the night of her 16th birthday.  Meets Eves sister who falls for girl and together they quest to find Eve.  Eve returns love to girl but then erases all her own existence in the world.

To Aru Kagaku no Railgun

Nutshell: City full of students wielding various special powers.  Only level 5 student has strange fetish roommate who likes to share her panty collection and orders chinese import aphrodisiacs.  Incredibly funny show so far but it has yet to acquire a plot line.

Kampfer

Nutshell: Guy gets special powers that can only be used if he is in the form of a girl so due to nearby allies and enemies he randomly turns into said girl.  He/She ends up getting switched to all girl section of school where, strangely enough, all the girls fall for she/he including she/he’s love interest, though he would rather she like him as a guy.

japanese cartoon characters

I just realized that within a span of 2-3 mnths i know the names of most of the japanese cartoon characters which come on Hungama channel and Pogo channel thnx to my little one ..

the most famous of thm all is i guess ‘Doraemon ” – the cat . then there is Nobita, Shizuka,Dorami,Korusuke , Miyuka , Sunio, Gutan Borilla ,Jyian,  Togari,Hagemaru , Okarumaru , Asarichan , Shin-chan ,  and all the rest

Shin chan is one of most popular Japanese cartoon series across the world. Its Hindi version  is aired on a popular kiddie channel, Hungama TV. Though Shin Chan may appear to be just another regular kindergarten going child but dont they often say that looks can be very deceptive.

Shin Chan often uses fairly impolite language, argues with his mother practically on all occasions, misbehaves at school with his teachers and friends . all of this obviously shown with the excuse of simple ignorance of correct behavior due to his very young age.

Just juxtaposing all this with the comics and cartoons that we grew up with

first there was the legion of superheroes from DC comics — the foremost among them undoubtedly – Superman ,,, ( with also supergirl, superboy, lois lane, lana lang)then Batman ( robin , batwoman, batgirl , catgirl ) , Green Lantern , Captain America , Wonderwoman, the Flash,Green Arrow, Captain Marvel, the JUstice League

then there is marvel comics with  Spiderman, Fantastic Four, Iron Man , The Hulk,X-men, Wolverine

other than that we had Zorro – the masked legend , the Phantom – the ghost who walks, Richie rich , casper – the friendly ghost ,

the Archie andrews gang — archie , betty , veronica , jughead , ethel, reggie, dilton , moose , midge - josie and the  pussycats , sabrina  – the teen witch

then the indian comics — indrajal comics with   phantom ,   mandrake and lothar , flash gordon , bahadur

diamond comics — with chacha chaudhary , sabu , pinky etc

and finally tinkle — chamataka, doob doob , shikari shambhu, supandi, kalia the crow ,, and who can forget amar chitra katha  with those ammmaazzzing stories from our mythology  !!!!!!!

Seitokai no Ichizon: Episode 9

Chizuru… Oh god… I came close to shedding a tear. Chizuru’s past is sad and yet so realistic. That’s the main focus. Today’s whiteboard: “Read Books” and so, let’s begin.

Quick Game: Which one does not belong? Anyways…

Meet Miyashiro Kanade. Cute, right? Chizuru’s dear friend from middle school. Why’s she look so sad? Well, she has something to say.

She was a friend to Chizuru. She cared for her but… Chizuru was surprisingly popular. She didn’t want to lose her friend and so she drove others away with lies and rumors. She’s so cute~ Thinking that’s the best way to keep her friend.

Of course the isolation in Chizuru’s heart is healed by the amazing power of… The Student Council? Eh…. yeah, that’s about it. Screen Cap gallery follows as always.

I can’t do anymore today. Headache is killing me. I’ll get up early tomorrow though.

Ao no Ether
Nakajima Megumi
Macross Frontier
Ending Song

I’ll give you
one of my names that is important to me
Just give me one of your words
all except the word “goodbye”

a bead of light and then a wave
You’re a bird and then the universe

I was always by your side
when we smiled,we were connected
The day that everything was in harmony

I wanted to be with you every time
no matter what voice I use
I can’t reach you
On my Blue blue blue journey
Not to attack nor to defend,
My feelings are in the middle.
Between glitters and despair,
My feelings are in the middle.

The future are wings, then lead
I’m the water, then the flames

I always want to be with you
more than love, I was closer to you
The day when everything into one stays warm

I wanted to be with you every time
I can’t hear the music
Falling far away from you
On my blue blue blue journey

Blue blue blue journey

Otaku

For those of you who hear the word “onna otaku” in English it means she geek or nerd.  Here’s a little history of the “otaku” word.  Otaku (おたく/オタク) means nerd, geek or fan.  The word originates from a polite second-person pronoun meaning “your home” in Japanese, allowing the speaker to refer to the listener indirectly.

Since the 1980s it’s been used, much like the term “geek” in the US, to refer to people who are really into technology, video games, ANIME, MANGA and extensions of these such as COSPLAY, FIGURES and IDORU.

The etymology of the word is complex, but there are several possibilities.  The explanation preferred by cultural commentators is that because young nerds stayed home a lot, they were unable to manage social interactions and referred to one another indirectly as “otaku”.

Example, some of the founders of the anime studio GAINAX were among the first hardcore anime aficionados where “otaku” is commonly used as “you”.  It’s possible fans who encountered the Gainax crew may have adopted the dialect as slang.  The word “otaku” was used by the characters in Studio Nue’s seminal anime MACROSS in 1982.

In the US “otaku” entered the English vocabulary and gradually gained traction at anime conventions in the early 1990s and spread like wildfire with AnimEigo’s translation of Otaku no Video in 1993.  That same year the word was established enough and appeared on the cover of the premiere issue of Wired magazine.  In 1994, the annual convention Otakon was formed, referencing otaku in its very name.  This spread to sci-fi with mention in William Gibson’s 1996 novel Idoru, then a slew of news articles on anime fandom in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

What does an Onna Otaku look like?

She NerdAccording to Wired Magazine here are 10 Ways to Identify an Onna Otaku

Hair: No chestnut dyes, no colored highlights, minimal brushing.

Wardrobe: Generic jeans, shirts, and sneakers (with price tag left on, Minnie Pearl-style). Jacket from store at train station. For more formal occasions: school uniform, kimono, or Dhoulmagus costume. (He’s the mysterious jester from Dragon Quest VIII. Duh!)

Pets: Six virtual pups on her Nintendo DS. (She feeds and walks them hourly.)

Phone: Worn clipped on pocket to look “technical.” It’s got a 3-megapixel camera, built-in smartcard purchasing, TV tuner, MP3 player, and browser.

Storage: Cute bags are OK for jaunts, but she prefers wheeled luggage for comic cons and epic shopping trips.

Magazines: Four different anime monthlies, Cosmode (for cosplayers), and Dolly Dolly (for figurine fans).

Diet: Why cook when 7-Eleven has beef bowls and habanero snack chips?

Recent Purchases: Action figures and manga galore. Spool of DVD-Rs for, uh, “backup” copies of her fave shows.

On her laptop: Script for Sailor Moon/Anakin Skywalker doujinshi (fan comic), links to manga release schedules and 2ch.net (think Slashdot).

Under her mattress: Boy’s Love comics, which depict romantic, tragic, and hot pretty boy-on-pretty boy action.

Now that you know what an Onna Otaku looks like have you meet one?
