Naruto shippuuden & Bleach is two of the best anime that i have come across in years of watching anime. what makes them so great is that they have a great story line and to me they never fail to delivery. out of the two i would say that bleach gets a little edge over Naruto Shippuuden.
Some of you guys might not be anime fans or might not even know what im talking about, if you are not a fan or dont know what im talking about you should check out the Bleach and Naruto Shippuuden series. I know some of you will disagree with what i said but that fine you are always welcome to share your views on my blog.
What categories are there other than uncategorized? I’m actually pretty confused about that one.
I’ve decided that I don’t need to be bloggy about dreams, because dreams are just so fuzzy-like. I shouldn’t try to un-fuzz them and tell the dreams in a linear way.
I was in the dream, but I wasn’t me.
My friends and I were on this bad scienfiction/ fantasy quest.
We were blown away (like Odysseus was blown to Africa, or how Percy Jackson and friends were blown along… somewhere in The Sea of Monsters) to Japan and we didn’t speak Japanese
I somehow ended up in Tokyo U. To be admitted there I had to sign this certificate that said that I had graduated high school and was eligible to attend the university.
I tried to sign as a Rachelle or Rebecca somebody but it didn’t look like a real signature. I would scribble out the signatures several times, until I finally decided that I should just sign my own name.
And then I thought to myself “This is too easy. What about that guy from Love Hina who couldn’t get into Tokyo U? I’m sure that he did better in high school than I did.” And then poof! My future at Tokyo U was gone.
I’d like to add that the people at the school didn’t actually tell me that I wasn’t accepted. I couldn’t accept myself to take a chance and see if I actually could get into the school.
In a few days of my break and AnimeSoft webpage become a chaos, i give permission for others staff member here and they post a plenty things about other OS’s and Companies. Even the fact we are friends with Google, their OS has nothing to do with us.
.
Well, back to the main story. On my vacation i remembered to bring with me a Mangá. And on the end i could finally realize what kind of entertainment is most effective emotionally.
Even that I already watched Love Hina on my Netbook, this time I got to read the story again on a Mangá. At the beginning i felt odd, but i got in the story very soon, and on the end i felt that it had drawn me out of the reality. I was inside of the story, i was in the Mangá.
Because of that fact, now i can justify that Mangá is more addicted than Anime, it is more effective emotionally and ilusionally.
But why? That’s simple to explain: In a Mangá, you create your own character voice, smell, moves, touch fellings and you create your own scenary colors, sounds, smells, moves,…
Resuming: With Mangá you can create your own desired fantasy story!
The contras about a Mangá is the fact that for creating a own fantasy you need peace, place, enjoy and to be very calm. And to watch anime, even with a disco party in your home you will be able to watch it and enjoy it.
.
.
Remember:
God said we should love him, not humans. SingStars and MovieStars is reality, they should not be loved. Animê & Mangá are a fantasy based on stories, and they can’t be considerated as a real beloved ones. If Goddes chosen ones created Animê & Mangá, the Devil chosen beings created Hentai and Doujins to destroy that wonderful world and create bad gossips about Goddes work.
And… Animê & Mangá is made for grown-ups, because it’s too hard for childrens to understand.
.
“ If you watch Anime or read Mangá, you are surely a good-hearted and smart being!”
The entire series was about how much more clumsy the cute Koyomi could be.
What a disappointment and anti-climax. We reach the end of the series and for a show that had so much potential at the beginning, this turned out to be dreadful. A lot of wasted potential here, it had a decent setting and plot that could have gotten it going, but too often and too much time was focused on Koyomi’s understanding (or rather, lack of) of the situation at hand.
Yumiko became the big evil villain.
This last episode is simply about how they (Misa, Misa’s ghostscript, Koyomi, Kaho and Soushiro) were to defeat the now evil Digitalis-Yumiko. Everything was much too convenient. For a character like Koyomi, who has absolutely no idea of what she’s doing and then deciding what that she is of course always correct, the result of everything working in their favour is nothing short of ridiculous.
Yes, Koyomi was cute to begin with with her “Demo, Demo…” and “Are, are-re?”, but this soon was overboard. Even the pantsu jokes couldn’t keep this series afloat.
They brought the bright and smiling villain back again.
Koyomi continues to hone her skills in summoning wash pans.
“This is a story about a girl who transforms all magic in to pans.” Koyomi’s magical ability (or again, lack of) was funny to start the series off, but not so funny later on. Lets be honest, the only real magic that we really saw was at the beginning with Yumiko’s rage throwing that huge tornado thing in episode 00. Wash pans aside, there was a ridiculous number of times that the spell “Transform to swords, my Code.” was used. In fact, I’m 99% confident that this was the only spell I ever saw Yumiko use except at the very beginning. The bad guy used and taught it, even Misa ended up using it. >_> More variety of magic please! It’s like the writers ran out of imaginative things to say.
I have no idea why I didn’t drop this (perhaps because it was only 12 episodes) but I didn’t really enjoy watching this as much as other anime. So much wasted potential. 5/10
The tightly fought match is in the final quarter and the scores are pretty close. Hiruma is going full offense to get 2 touchdowns with 12 minutes left. Hiruma continues to pass the ball to Montakun despite Kamaguruma keep chariot bumping him.
With 2 minutes left, Montakun finally prove that no one can beat him in catching after hearing some words of encouragement. With little time left, they have to get another touchdown instead of kicking it over the goal line to tie the game. It was down to Eyeshield 21 to dash forward but halfway through the line was held to a standstill, Eyeshield 21 has no choice but to fly over the line and scored a touchdown. The game is tied at 20-20 but Deimon Devil Bats won the match (most touchdowns scored) and the rights to represent Japan!
Football clinic explains that when a team fumbles the ball and the enemy takes it, the enemy will get to go on the offense. Fumble is when a player drops the ball.
Eyeshield 21 [Episode 22] A Mysterious Girl Appears?!
After winning the match against the Taiyo Sphinx, a journalist wants to reveal the secret identity of Eyeshield 21 and hired a spy to uncover the truth. The mysterious girl got caught and she reveals that she is being hired to find out the identity of Eyeshield 21. At the training, she also challenges Eyeshield 21 to race down the mountain which Montakun accepts. If she losses, she will let it go but if she win she will get to know who Eyeshield 21 is.
During the race, she ran over a twig and tumble over a cliff hanging by some roots. Eyeshield 21 grab some hose and tight it to the tree and manage to save her in the nick of time. She then reveals that she took this job to find her missing brother who left home to seek fame in football.
Football clinic explains that the game is start with a kick off from the team’s 35 yard line.
Eyeshield 21 [Episode 23] The Weightless Man?!
After a brief interview with the NASA Aliens, both Panther and Sena wanted to play against each other. Panther is a dropout of the team and uses his grandma’s saving to fly over to Japan with a hope to play in the game.
While in Japan, the coach’s cat had gone missing. Panther was given a chance to play if he is able to retrieve the cat. Panther met Sena and together they went and search the cat together.
Football clinic explains the difference between return touchdown from a regular touchdown. A return touchdown is when a receiving team takes a kicked ball and runs it all the way back for a touchdown.
Eyeshield 21 [Episode 24] Blitz! Japan Vs USA?!
It’s match day between Deimon Devil Bats and the American NASA Aliens. Kimura and their coach made a wager for the match. If Deimon lose by 10 points they have to leave Japan, whereas if the NASA Aliens lose 10 points or more they cannot return to America.
Himura started by blitzing the line but they cannot break through the NASA Aliens Muscle Barrier. NASA Aliens is leads 14-0 in the first quarter while the Deimon Devil Bats continue blitzing to counter their Shuttle Pass leaving their defense vulnarable. Finally, the shuttle Pass in broken and Deimon Devils Bats is on the offense. Meanwhile Panther is hungry to play and waiting patiently to pounce on Eyeshield 21.
Football clinic explains what happens in a blitz. A blitz is when the secondary defenders behind the line charge forward. It’s a power move where you sacrifice defense to stop the opponent’s play.
Eyeshield 21 [Episode 25] The Caged Black Panther?!
Eyeshield 21 wanted to play against Panther but Panther isn’t part of the team. Montakun told him that in order to get Panther on the field, all he has to do is keep winning and eventually Panther will be on the field. Eyeshield 21 continues blazing down the field and scores a touchdown. The game is now 14-12.
Deimon Devil Bats continue to outplay and leading the NASA Aliens 26-21. The NASA Aliens are under pressure and making mistakes. The NASA Aliens and Panther beg their coach to let Panther play. The coach has a flashback reminisce his life as a player but still is unconvinced as Panther never undergo training.
The players convinced that he had training with the team and they even had a new formation created together Panther. The coach agreed and instructs him to stop Eyeshield 21.
Football clinic explains about bump. It’s a technique where you shove aside the receiver so that you can prevent him from successfully catching the pass.
Naahh. . just using part of my time to type type, ya knoww, takes years to wait for anime to load. Can’t wait to finish vampire knight today so that I could start with the second season soon! Really really craving to watch the next season. I have be4en looking for morbid animes to watch recently. I’m getting too cheesed with romance stories. That’s the reason why I do not like typical love story-animes. I want the weird, twisted kind of love story. When it comes to my genre, most morbid animes and some episodes are blocked because of too much morbidity. Which is just too senseless since its supposed to be MORBID. It’s just similar to censoring hentai anime or cutting random ecchi scenes. I go for manga when it happens like that. But depends on the mood though, if I am patient to wait for every page to load. Anyway, as I recently posted, I have just relived my otaku nerves and I haven’t heard of anime news for a really long while. At the moment, I am at the search of morbid anime. It’s really cool. Besides, it’s a good way to relax my very stressed nerves due to the very bad incident yesterday.
Duchowni ratują go i dają mu schronienie w sanktuarium.
Zostawiam Was teraz z muzyką i grafiką.
OP: “Aka no Kakera” by Suzuki Yuki
END: “Hitomi no Kotae” by Noria
AnimeDreams, AnimeFriends, AnimeCon… É sempre a mesma coisa.
Today was fairly a good day, it was like got up, exam and then free!!!
Until I got to accounting class. He kind of yell at us, was angry because of our attitude, but I tried to participate a little, hopefully will continue that way to enjoy the class, before I wouldn’t even laugh.
So anywayz, leaving that aside… GINTAMA 176, I laugh so hard when Gin-chan said if was another “We are ending for real this time fraud” ROFLOLMAO!!!! It was certainly the countdown, but not for the ending, instead were the “best quotes” of the anime characters… but just check this out, they’re teasing us with the little movie previews!!! How much bloodier could that be, can’t wait!!
And also, my favorite line was:
Zura ja nai, KATSURA DA!!!
Also started reading Lost+Brain, for the similitude with Death Note I think I stopped on chapter 1 a few years, but decided to check it again I don’t know why, and it’s rather interesting… but, couldn’t help to say this:
Just as keikaku
Misa, you’re doing it right
Take a chip and EAT IT!
Want to see the new op and ed for Gintama so badly, and also… going to skip school tomorrow, my weekend starts!

Sorry for the long delay ‘coz there are things that should be done in our school (^^,) but I’m doing my best to do this post on a weekly basis. I’ve changed the title to ‘Awesome 2D Pix’ because some of the pix can’t be categorize as anime.
If you’re wondering where did I got these pix, you can visit my primary source which is at Animepaper.net…
I think that’s all for now. Ciao and have a great day!
For quiet some time I haven’t been able to Blog about anime series like I promised several entries ago. You might want to take a guest: Cosplay activities and my job. Since I have been preoccupied in the past months (with a minimum of 1 entry per month which was kinda awkward for a self proclaimed God of Blogging) I decided to gather all my thoughts regarding the anime series that I have seen recently even for almost a year, since I wasn’t been able to hang around with Jay because of the Rider Project (some asshole tend to call it “Rider System” though).
First off, I already have done a write up regarding the overly manly action series Sengoku Basara (still I’m not finished with it). The 100 degree-wall-ride standing on a horse and a horse with exhaust pipes and handle bars are overly epic, like any Flip could utter “anong klaseng kalokohan yan (what kind of folly was that)? I could remember well it was mention while pertaining some asshole to be immoral or such. Unfortunately we often mistook Samurai Warriors cosplayers as Sengoku Basara cosplayers, knowing the fact that both are based from Japan’s ancient history. There is also Shin Mazingkaiser for super robots buffs, that were indeed awesome as the title itself. I have already a blog about Akikan! with all the basic information intact with it. It should have been my permanent style of writing and criticizing anime series but I don’t have the time to furnish them all. So Maria†Holic and Chaos;Head anime blog won’t receive the same V.I.P. treatment (I supposed I mentioned blogging them individually at one of my entries). Instead I’m going to squeeze them up here along with some comments from several anime shows I have seen for the past months.
After Jay blogged about MariHo (that’s Maria†Holic, condensed), I decided to come up with my own version in my mind. But due to the youconsequences and the businesses I have, I lost the chance of doing it. Yet I can still summarize it under few sentences right? Maria†Holic was published by the artsy-fartsy studio SHAFT and the premise is all about a tall girl named Kanoko who was about to enter an all girls Catholic School (there were nuns, right?) and she hopes to find her love within it. She’s a lesbian, and her fantasies could match up any perverted guy’s wildest imagination. But here’s a thing: each time a boy touches her, she burst into rashes and when she sees something cute (especially a girl) or even cleavages, she explodes with nose bleeding. Then she meets this “Maria” girl with her cool looking maid Matsurika. For some couple of minutes her mind was filled with her until she finds out that this Maria girl was actually a crossdressing guy. In chan terms, she has been trapped!! What could have been a guy doing within the premises of an all girl’s Catholic School? He explains his purpose that he is the ex-director’s grandson. And thus the conflict of two perfect couple began. Kanoko cannot accept a guy inside their campus yet when Maria poses cute, she melts right away but when he turn his sadistic side, she retaliates and Maria will repeat the former to succumb her.
Ano pa hinihintay niyo? DIVE NA!!
Just in case you were wondering why Maria was bullying Kanoko is because she’s a lesbo. We might be able to accept lesbians nowadays but within the all girl’s Catholic School she’s considered a threat and to make sure things going smooth, Maria must keep an eye on her tomfoolery. Maria†Holic is a fun show actually, not to mention Yuu Kobayashi’s erotic moaning on the series’ opening “Hanaji”. The ending theme sung by the three main protagonists’ voice actors “Kimi ni Mune Kyun” was a revival from an 80’s electronic pop group YMO.
Worst Case Scenario
Before Maria†Holic I have also seen a 12-episode series under the guise of Chaos;Head. Only a few months more then it will be a year since it were first aired in Japan. Chaos;Head is actually a visual novel made by Nitroplus and published by Madhouse Studios. It depicts the inner demons struggling within a hikkikomori named Takumi Nishijo. Practically this series is all about delusions and the main premise of the story is when a certain chain of events happen that greatly affected Takumi, his life as a high school student, his relationship with her sister Nanami, his friend Rimi and being an MMO addict.
To be honest at first glance you might want to consider Chaos;Head as one of the harem-type anime you have seen before (this was made a pun on the ending of the series). You were wrong. Chaos;Head is was more of a psycho-thriller with some detective work and a lot of unexpected twist and genjutsu. And also a lot of QUALITY, in spite of the fact it has been made by Madhouse (make a guess, low budgeted to give way for merchandise?). But there are good things that make this series worthy. First, the characters. They may look stereotypical but their characteristics made them different however. Takumi wasn’t exactly a hero-type material any other boy next door out there. In fact he’s a coward. You might have thought Yua as the resident gentle fujyoshi but behind those glasses she’s equally threatening especially when he investigates Takumi regarding the death of her twin. Then Rimi was this certain cheerful girl but actually she’s only taking orders from someone else. Next we have the D-Swords. Good cosplay material that I have to procrastinate how to do the mechanism on Rimi’s D-Sword. Imagine school girls with huge swords that they summon to destroy delusion-generating ports. And lastly the way the story was driven. In the series I just can’t wait for next episode because of just when things started to heat up, the show will prompt you for the next episode because the events happens so fast! So I advise you that if you’re going to watch the series, have it downloaded from the alpha to the omega to avoid suspension. The last three episodes are kinda fast-paced and dissatisfying that you might want to essentially download and play the game on PC or on X-Box 360 which was I’m opting to do. The opening was done by Itou Kanoko entitled the pessimistic “F.D.D (Filthy Defiler Disgrace)” and the cheerful and positive ending theme “Super Special” was done by Seira Kagami.
It has been also a year ago since I have bashed the Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk. Based on the old-school NAMCO arcade game, GONZO made a sequel of the same title, labeling it as The Sword of Uruk. It’s just a continuation as Jil tries to climb the next tower while other things starting to unfold. To be honest I haven’t seen the ending of the second season (unless I have the time for it) yet I heard comments that it was somewhat satisfying. And yeah! More tentacle raep… no I mean roper action on Fatina!! Speaking of GONZO, we also have Strike Witches. Yes, those mecha musume based on World War II fighter planes, flying loli and panties. Although full of cameltoes and fans service (that’s in the DVD), it is considered as one of GONZO’s masterpiece: Well researched characters, concepts and even the names of the main characters were based from World War II pilots. Another work of GONZO that looked so seemingly harmless was a Mah Jong based anime series called Saki.
LOL GONZO.
If you are a fan of Akagi or any Mah Jong anime, this is must watch. The main protagonist here is girl which bares the name of the said series who has been invited to join a Mah Jong club and surpasses them all. Even if she excels them, the members have a hard time pursuing her to join their club. Here we also have Nodoka, whose humongous breasts defy the laws of physics and the legendary Taco Loli or Yuki who was always seen munching tacos (she’s also voiced by The Rie). It seems like she’s willing to do everything for tacos.
I’ll give you tacos in exchange for…
ASSES.
Aside from Mah Jong, Saki is also known for panty-less characters, because much of the scenes that includes (low) angular shots involves ass cheeks. Pyong becomes hysterical when I told him that irrelevant fan service might pop up in Saki when I told him it will be produced by GONZO, which was gaining reputation regarding fan service anime. He said that ‘where pantyshots will appear while they were sitting and busy playing Mah Jong’? Fellow anime blogger Gabbie
points out when I asked her about is there any upskirts in Saki, she replied that there were none, because they removed their panties. That explains why there are a lot of ass scenes in it. I guess we’ve got our answers now. And Jay and I mouth-watered when we took a glimpse of the first episode, that we have to head out towards the nearest Taco Bell outlet. It seems like Saki will be synonymous with Taco Bell for quite some time.
The sad truth.
Nodoka after challenging the invincible Akagi to a Strip Mah Jong.
I’m just surprised that it ran for 20 plus episodes leaving behind the moe-infested K-On! like Gabbie told me. And like the most of the anime series, I have only seen few episodes of them, and that includes K-On! which only ran for 12. I’m only at the episode where the four girls made their first performance and the whole crowd saw Mio’s striped panties similar to Luccini’s (there were no fan service albeit it is strongly implied). And I missed a lot of it, including Asuza, the newly recruited member of the band of retarded moeness. Since I only needed to see K-On! in a nut shell, I followed Just5Guy’s (now they are known as TheLoliBrigade on Youtube) K-On! The Abrdiged Series. Upon seeing that my YM avatar was still Mio, Gabbie advices me to see Bakemonogatari which until now I haven’t seen a single episode. See how delayed I am when it comes to anime.
I have also seen some episodes of Eden of the East then after that I lost track of it right after Jay’s Warhammer Project dismissed. And that includes the OAV of To Love Ru where Rito literally genderbent. Chrome Shelled Regios is also a good watch if you like anime with RPG elements in it, yet the only thing good there is Felli’s pakipot (tsundere) antics towards Leyfon. Done with Kannagi even though I missed some episodes. It was like a slice of life with a supernatural element in it (how about a chic comes out of a wood carving and calls herself a god?). And then some episodes of Witchblade anime that was very different from its western counterpart. Speaking of going western, Madhouse Studios also opt to create the anime remake of Ironman and the X-Men’s Wolverine. In the trailer, Ironman was equally awesome as Wolverine was equally off. Who would ever thought of making Logan a bishounen? And it doesn’t fit his rugged personality.
Due to my brother’s addiction to Naruto Shippuden, he even tried to see other anime subbed by Dattebayo Fansubs resulting to finishing the shonen ai series 07-Ghost. His yaoi-fangirl girlfriend was deeply amazed that she couldn’t believe it. I also tried Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. Jason lends me his copy and I’m done with the first season with few more episodes to finish the very awesome A’s. I just don’t have the time to watch them all so finally I could give it back (plus my DVD-Rom was busted). And then we have the romance-comedy-drama Toradora.
Toradora is a slice-of-life themed anime about two people namely Taiga Aisaka and Ryuuji Takasu. The title is play on words Tora (tiger) and Dora (the first two syllables on the katakana of the English word dragon). Ryuuji is an ordinary high-school boy who have a frightening feature on his eye that made others call him as a delinquent even if he weren’t and Taiga was know for the alias Palm Top Tiger and just as violent. Hell breaks lose when they first met with Taiga giving Ryuuji an uppercut (ganyan ba kababa tingin niyo sa akin?!) when he accidentally bumps her. Then Taiga was having a hard time putting a letter on her crush’s bag just to find out it was Ryuuji’s. That night Taiga attacked Ryuuji forcing him to return the mail but it was revealed that inside the letter it was intended for Kitamura, Ryuuji’s buddy and Taiga also found out that Ryuuji has a crush on Minorin, Taiga’s cheery best friend. To compromise Ryuuji presented himself to help her ordeal to get close to her crush in exchange for helping him back for gaining Minorin heart. Yet in the end the whole class thought of they were actually dating. And thus the fun begins.
Other characters were Minorin, the cheerful one who brings references from other anime series (it faded though), Kitamura, the class-representative guy and the sultry Ami, a model who always teases Ryuuji. The story circulates to these five main casts, each showing their ordeal as a high school student and their circumstances on their surroundings. The fun factor drops at the middle of the series that somebody was able to associate Toradora with an 80’s film “The Breakfast Club”, but it seems pretty normal for me. I managed to follow Toradora until Minorin ruined Christmas and right after that I couldn’t follow. It seems like I forgot everything about it but Kamen Rider Decade. Still I’m eager to finish it off, because in the ending it is obscured that Taiga and Ryuuji have sex. The opening themes were Pre Parade (Rie Kugimiya, Yui Horie, Eri Kitamura) and Silky Heart (Yui Horie) and the ending themes were Vanilla Salt (Yui Horie) and Orange (Rie Kugimiya) Toradora became so popular in the internet that TV5 decided to buy it and air it locally.
I just couldn’t believe it. At first I saw Toradora pirated DVDs being sold at Ozine Fest 2009 and it was aired already few months after the series was finished. And several Taiga cosplays brought to life by Ayametsuruya and Mica (who has become Gamer Totoy’s object of affection). Anyways, how’s the dubbing? Honestly I have to rate it mediocre. I also heard that TV5 didn’t finished Toradora, or maybe I wasn’t paying attention to watching TV recently.
Once I asked myself when will Comic Alley will be able to provide Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya merchandise? It was answered few months later along with some news that TV5 will air the said series (there was a huge Animega tarpaulin at the Cubao LRT Station). I did brought my first Haruhi poster that can be bought in Divisoria for only ten bucks and I just wondered how the translations would be at some awkward scenes like when Haruhi threatens the Computer Society club if they didn’t do her bidding (the “gangrape” were censored when it was aired at Japan) and what will Mikuru tell Kyon after she was forced to dress up as a bunny girl while giving off fliers of the SOS Brigade. They were answered while I was confined in the hospital for eating an expired cracker (not this again!) yet one fucked-up thing made me flare up. Do they really have to censor with mosaic/pixels specifically when Haruhi made the Computer Society president touch/grope Mikuru’s breast? It kinda looked convincing like an actually pr0n though. As Mariatopia would put it, written on her door “Censorship promotes pornography”, she did a point here. There was no malice on that scene actually.
God is not amused.
Going more on Local, it seems like TV5 is having a ravaging rush on airing top-notching anime such as Shakugan no Shana. Just when I finished the second season of the said show, it was when TV5 aired the first season. Luckily I needed to backtrack some scenes. Nothing much but it was horribly dubbed. Unlike the next show during that time Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge or simply known as The Wallflower anime. The voice acting on this was expressive and superb that it gave more life to the characters and the show itself, compared to the original Japanese dub which a friend of mine coined. And we also have the overrated mecha anime Code: Geass. It was mispronounced as Code: Jizz as GMA-7 did Tenjou Te-nge. Shitstorm were inevitable when it was posted on the imageboard we all love, being aired at the Failippines. The dubbing sucks and I’m still having a hard time to appreciate the said series. They were a lot Code: Geass related cosplay locally, but mostly Lelouch and CC. Another localization made by TV5 was Azumanga Daioh. Japanese word-play jokes remains intact and the dubbing kinda reminded me during the time QTV aired Galaxy Angels. No wonder the dubbing on this one was good. And also Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, as if they were competing with Animax: Airing an on-going series. The dubbing is also good, the voices were familiar.
You might be aware that GMA-7 will air the anime adaptation of an award winning Korean drama series Jewel in the Palace (my parents almost got me killed because of this series) aptly called Jang Geum’s Dream. I don’t have any ideas regarding the said series but isn’t it a bit exaggerated when you need to do an acrobatic leap to catch a vegetable you tossed earlier?
Let’s go on to cable channels. Hero TV/Channel boasted that they are they are the Cable channel that airs anime translated into Tagala in an almost 24/7 basis. While spending a night on Maddaluther’s place, I decided to observe their midnight special which mostly contain fan service anime. There was Ursula’s Kiss, Hero’s rough translation of Revolutionary Girl Utena. I’m just wondering if that huge white flower that appears when Utena transforms was indeed a form of censorship. I need to confirm it and Youtube is my best friend when it comes to watching chipped scenes. Then right after that I couldn’t believe my eyes they did Najica Blitz Tactics done by Studio Fantasia who produces well-known fan service anime such as Agent Aika. I need not to say more about the series. Hero does a dirty job on censorship each cleavages and upskirts by utilizing Gaussian Blur. I think it would be best if they didn’t air it at all!
Then we have Animax. Although Gun X Sword, Le Chvalier D’eon and Darker Than Black were well rated series, I tried to watch them but due to my busy schedule I wasn’t able to do so. I don’t know exactly the premise of Gun X Sword, Le Chevalier D’eon has a crossdressing element in it (so I decided to cosplay it sometime next year) and Darker Than Black is kinda interesting. Unfortunately our tapped cable service got busted so I guess no more Animax for me. Heh.
Is it really going to happen or it’s just me? After acquiring Blue Dragon by Akira Toriyama, ABS-CBN is now going to air Soul Eater and Gintama? I saw one of their commercial promotions (Anime-zing bay un?). Anyways I’ll be hearing familiar voices if so, but I’m not in the mood to follow shounen type series right now. So these sums up my Anime Circus though I thought of I have missed some series that I have seen, forecasted and such. Now I haven’t been able to catch up if ever Little Kuriboh has uploaded his new Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series, as TheLoliBrigade did their K-On! The Abridged series and now I am opt to take a peek on Kamen Rider W’s few episodes. I’m still looking forward to watch the Kamen Rider Decade movies, including the recent movie All Riders VS Dai Shocker and the next one where Kivara will be able to be utilized as a henshin device. And I have no updates on the anime series that will be aired at falls since I haven’t been able to hang around at Jay’s crib. Plus the guy’s studying (unfortunately I am not) and I’m busy preparing for the next cosplay events, making costumes and hunting for a new job. So time is crucial right now. And blogging might be difficult for a hectic guy like me to incorporate it in even if I am preparing for a huge religious attack next month.
Anyway still, Godspeed. Love.

Picture by ikea.com; not for commercial use
Sonst verrät man alles.

Wow, it’s been a long trek to get this on DVD. It’s kinda ironic that the last bit of all the original Dragon Ball/Z/GT related animations we finally get uncut are the first few episodes of the series (not including the 2008 special or Kai in that, purely all the originally released stuff.)
This is where the king of shonen anime started over twenty years ago. How does it stand up to it’s bigger brother Dragon Ball Z? Let’s take a look.
Starting with packaging, this is the same packaging anyone who has the DBZ orange bricks, or the DBGT green bricks is used to, just blue. Basic digipak with a slipcase. I’m not a fan of digipaks, but it does the job well. The logo on the slipcase is Funi’s own Dragon Ball logo (if it in fact is Japanese in origin, I haven’t been able to find any evidence of it’s use prior to Funimation.) The logo comes across good on it’s blue background with a nice clean picture of Goku on the front cover. The logo is also embossed on all four sides of the slipcase. There’s a ‘digitally remastered’ tag on the front, but I’ll go over that when I go over the video quality. The packaging does the job with a decent cover design.
The menu is clean and crisp, although much like the GT menu, for some odd reason, a 4:3 show, get’s a 16:9 menu that has black bars ADDED to it to make it appear even wider. There isn’t anything specifically wrong with this, it just looks a bit strange.
Now, onto Dragon Ball itself. Dragon Ball is very odd to review in that, I’ve been waiting a long time for this release. I remember being introduced to DBZ through ancient raw tapes (having no idea what it was until much later), waking up early to catch the original dub of Dragon ball at 5:30am as a kid. Re-watching it now, it’s easy to see why. Dragon Ball is a delight. While a bit aged, it is far more entertaining than Dragon Ball Z. It is superior to it’s more well known ’sequel’ in almost every way. It’s about characters on an adventure. It’s filled with comedy and action. It’s the exact show you just want to sit back and relax and enjoy. It’s just plain fun. While characters may not be fleshed out as much as they may be in a high class drama, you know exactly what each character is up to and what they are thinking and you can’t help but smile at how they act. From Goku being an innocent little kid, to Oolong and Roshi’s perversity, to Krillin just being that lovable little bald kid, I found myself enjoying every moment like I was a little kid (also, ‘points up at picture’ MONKEY!) The set has the first 31 episodes, which gives you the initial arc introducing many of the main characters, Goku and Krillin training for their first tournament, the tournament itself, and the very beginning of the plot of the nefarious Red Ribbon Army. The value of this set is amazing for a show so good. It’s a must buy for shonen fans. If you aren’t a shonen fan, and don’t like Dragon Ball Z… give Dragon Ball a chance, you might get a bit suprised.
It can be hard to judge video quality for old shonen animation. The video quality on the set is relatively good and is even encoded as progressive (480p.) There are minor flaws in the video that crop up once in awhile due to the age of the material. It actually looks far better than I expected. My main issue is ‘digitally remastered’ being on the box. Applying what appears to be a digital video noise reduction filter as they did on the Z and GT set to artificially make the picture appear ‘cleaner’ produces a few instances of line issue, but it’s very rare. Whoever was in charge of the dial for the noise reduction used a much lighter touch than we saw on Z (which suffered numerous problems) and GT (which while not having major problems generally appeared ‘fuzzy’). There are definitely a few rare occasions where I noticed an issue, but to be fair, I was looking for them. It’s definitely the best we’ve ever gotten Dragon Ball before and despite some DVNR issues, I have no major complaints about the video, and found it relatively well done (and to reiterate since someone will ask, yes, the video is uncut, including what is arguably early Dragon Ball’s most famous scene.)
The set has two audio tracks. A 5.1 Dolby English dub at 448k, and a 1.0 Dolby of the Japanese at 96k. The dub audio is quite clear, which sort of contrasts with the music and effects which clearly sound much older, but it works well. The Japanese audio track is a smidge louder, and is quite nice to finally get the first 13 episodes on DVD with Japanese audio.
The dub for Dragon Ball is very good. It’s far more of an attempt to be true to the original than the Z or GT dubs. Ironically it was likely done this way because, while you have some degree of mass market appeal with Z and GT, it is a much harder sell for Dragon Ball, even edited down as it was for Cartoon Network (the version featured here is the uncut dub that previously appeared on DVDs, and for the first time in North America, that includes the first 13 episodes.) The cast used is Funimation’s Dragon Ball Z cast, minus cast changes for character ages. The dub uses the original music (including dubbing the intro and outtro song for the English track) and isn’t rewritten en masse like Z/GT. There are some rewrites for jokes or other elements, but these generally mesh well. It’s a very enjoyable dub.
As for extras, there aren’t many. You get clean versions of the intro and outtro, which are exactly what you expect them to be. You also get a 23 page booklet with character profiles and artwork, and basic summaries of the episodes in the set. Nothing big, but I’m not sure what else would be expected.
Dragon Ball is basically where modern shonen anime got it’s start, and it’s easy to see why so many shows seem to follow from the path it set. The show works very well, even more than twenty years later. I recommend all shonen fans give it a look, and anyone else who wants an enjoyable time to give this show a change, because it’s just plain great.
Show: A (The start of modern shonen anime, Dragon Ball is amazing, and you need to watch this show.)
Packaging: B (Decent quality digipak. It has good art, and looks relatively nice.)
Video Quality: B (Good video quality, a few issues due to age, and a few minor issues due to DVNR that may or may not be noticeable to most people.)
Audio Quality: B (Relatively clean audio for older content, Japanese track’s voicework isn’t quite as clean due to age.)
English Dub: A- (The dub is quite good, a few elements have been changed, mostly to add jokes, but they work well.)
Extras: C (Clean intro and outtro, and a basic booklet. It’s not alot, but it’s above the bare minimum that was expected.)
Overall (not an average): A (Not perfect, but the content and general quality makes it come close. The show itself is good enough that it’s worth a look almost for anyone).
Gallery under ad. All caps are lossless PNGs taken in MPC-HC, feel free to request more. (Caps are sized 640×480 so as to display properly on computer monitors, they were modified to this resolution via IrfanView’s batch conversion process as MPC-HC takes screen captures at the resolution the video is stored on the disk. The menu screencap was stretched to 853×480 to show at it’s proper resolution also.)
No meu modo ver, galera Halo Legends é sucesso garantido.

Description:
Peace was brought to the land by Kenshiro years ago. But now he is gone; merely a legend. Along with the peace came a distinction in classes, and soon a new era of violence began. A new tyranny arose, the fearsome fighters of the Gento Ko Ken style that fight for their Emperor of Heaven. Rin and Bart have grown up and formed a resistance called the “Hokuto Army”. When times are at their worst, Kenshiro returns! Can he stop the Gento terror? And what is the secret of the mysterious Land of Shura?

The highlight of the episode, Hina's confession to Ayumu.
This episode focuses and revolves around the night of Sakuya’s birthday where two stories unfold. Hinagiku finally decides to tell Ayumu what really happened between her and Hayate. Nagi goes missing and it’s up to Hayate, Isumi and Sakuya to look for her.
Expect moe-moe Hina on a ferris wheel, an emotional Nagi, a certain bit of Hayate’s past, Sakuya… imouto character?!
Last time, Sakuya celebrates a grand birthday party. Her maid Haru-san was shocked after knowing that Kasumi Aika, Vice-President of the Student Council, was also invited and even found out about her true identity, Harukaze Chiharu, Secretary of the Student Council. Later that evening, Nagi arrives to the party with Hayate. Both Wataru and Hayate were forced to do a stand-up comedy act with the latter actually succeeding. By the end of the episode, Hina arrives at Cafe Donguri and finds Ayumu working there. At that point, she decides to tell Ayumu the truth after work.
The episode starts with Hinagiku and Ayumu under the sakura trees. As Hina proposed last episode, they went to go watch the sakura as she wants to tell Ayumu something very important.
Before she could say it though, Ayumu proposes that they visit the symbol of the Ginnan Shopping District just beyond the park. It’s a symbol that is said to give people courage. Hina agrees as it will be a fitting place to tell Ayumu the truth… but then, after reaching the place, what was laid in front of her is…
Hina's version of the Nightmare Wheel.
Ayumu begins to narrate the ferris wheel’s structure, being 100m high at the peak. Hina begins to sweat and shake. It is basic knowledge, much like the fact that Shidou Mariya is actually a guy, that Hina is scared of heights. She insists on telling Ayumu the important thing but Ayumu tells her that it will be much better in a private place like a ferris wheel. Hina submits to it, thinking it is punishment for her betrayal.
This is as basic knowledge as Shidou Mariya being a guy.
Meanwhile, back at the party location, Hayate and Sakuya were talking outside. Hayate comments on how Sakuya is really a rich lady, renting off such a large hall, inviting a lot of people and having a cute maid by her side. Sakuya notes the “cute maid” remark and Hayate says that it’s not what she thinks. Sakuya then starts to comment about Hayate being an “invincible, almighty butler of the Sanzenin” who seems to be racking up all the girls, but tells him not to be so full of himself. Hayate denies being egotistical.
Hayate then mentions that he’s not good with women… even if he had started to love anyone… in the end, nothing will happen.
Yeah well, we don't care about you either.
Sakuya wonders why Hayate became silent and then Maria comes in, panicking. Nagi is missing!
Back in the ferris wheel, Ayumu admires the panoramic view from it and Hina comments the same way Ayumu does, but with her eyes closed. Ayumu asks her why she’s not looking outside and she informs her of her kendo ability, being able to see through the mind’s eye. Ayumu tells her it’s just scenery so normal eyes will do and then realizes that she must be afraid of heights. Hina opens her eyes and protests, saying that a simple scenery like that is nothing to be afraid of, she’s not scared of heights at all.
She looks out of the window and sees the view. She then becomes dizzy and Ayumu is reminded of Nagi, who is also a sore loser. Ayumu notes how both Hina and Nagi are cute in those areas. And then, the unthinkable happens. The ferris wheel comes to a stop at a high point. Ayumu checks on Hina and…
And at that point, thousands of hearts stopped beating.
Ayumu tries her best to calm Hina down. Hina sobs while asking Ayumu if they’re going to die at that rate.
At the party hall, Sakuya’s father assembled an elite party of search people: namely Hayate, Isumi and Sakuya. He comments that Nagi isn’t kidnapped anyway and if they launched a wider search party, the Aizawa family’s name will be stained. He tells them not to worry as he laid traps to lure Nagi out.
I don't have anything to say about this...
As all comedians do, he tests the trap himself.
And that's the last time we ever see him...
In any case, they have to look for Nagi immediately. Hayate notes that the hall is way too big. It will be very difficult. Isumi then makes a suggestion. Why don’t they just call Nagi’s cellphone? Hayate and Sakuya were shocked. Isumi made a sensible suggestion!!
In the end though, Nagi didn’t pick up the call.
Back at the ferris wheel, Ayumu tells Hina that singing a song may be able to make her calm down. Ayumu adds that when a tutor came to her place, she would always tell her that singing a song can you help you out of trouble. She also comments how she loved that tutor even though she would only teach her how to play the guitar and not teach her anything else. The guitar that her tutor left on her final day is one of her important treasures.
Hina then asks Ayumu to sing with her. Hina starts singing Dango Sankyodai.
Yancha na yaki dango~ yasashii an dango~
Ayumu cuts her midway, commenting on how Hina really started singing. Hina becomes embarrassed. Ayumu adds choosing Dango Sankyodai for a high schooler. Hina becomes more embarrassed and explains that it’s the first song that came to her mind. But now Ayumu is happy that Hina has calmed down. The ferris wheel starts moving again and Ayumu tells Hina to proceed with the reason why they’re there.
Part B. Hina starts spilling the beans. She explains that it was pretty lame of her to do it after telling Ayumu that she would cheer Ayumu on… but she betrayed Ayumu.
Back at the party hall, outside. Sakuya and Hayate were discussing where Nagi went. Sakuya explains that Nagi can’t stand the feeling of being alone. She then suddenly brings up the topic about Hayate’s parents. She asks if Hayate would ever consider living with them again if ever they returned and repented for all their faults. Hayate tells her that it won’t ever happen because second chances are impossible. But he does want to find his missing elder brother.
Sakuya seems a bit flustered after hearing Hayate say that he has an older brother. Sakuya sees that no one else is around and admits to Hayate that she has a bit of an older brother complex. She also wonders what she should call Hayate, after all, he’s much older than her and calling him “shakkin shitsuji” every time feels wrong.
She said the killer "o" word...
Both of them are speechless…
Anyway, for the matter at hand, Sakuya explains that Nagi has always gazed up at the sky with Yu-kyun, Nagi’s mother. She is now apparently the moon. Whenever Nagi feels lonely, she goes off by herself to stare at it.
At the ferris wheel again, Hina explains that during her birthday, she and Hayate were alone in the middle of the night at school, where no one could hear anything and no one could find out what they were doing. Err, I mean, where Hayate gave her some cookies as a birthday present and “some memories” if you know what I mean… okay, sorry, I keep getting carried away when talking about Episode 13. Some memories is noooot a suggestive comment. Anyway, and that’s when she realized that…
I dare you to say that again.
And Ayumu’s reaction is… *drum roll*
Anti-climactic Ending 1, GETTO!
Yeah... we know...
Looks like Ayumu isn’t that surprised. Hina looked so serious and assumed that Hina was going to say:
"OH GUREITZ!!"
Hina becomes a bit flustered and asks Ayumu what kind of reaction is that. She betrayed her. Ayumu then tells her that it may be the case but she had this feeling after visiting Shimoda. She feared that if she confessed to Hayate, they would never meet again. But she realized that they’re not separated by death. She can see him whenever she wants to. She doesn’t know if Hayate would ever look at her but she will do everything to make him look at her eventually.
Now Ayumu asks Hina if she plans to confess to Hayate after hearing about Ayumu’s side… and Hina’s response was…
Now THAT... is just too cute...
Ayumu doesn’t think romance is about winning or losing. Anyway, if it’s like that then it’s a race. Will Ayumu sweep Hayate off his feet first or… will he ask Hina out instead? Both competitors agree to a friendly, clean race.
Meanwhile, Hayate reaches Nagi’s place in the rooftop. Hayate asks why Nagi wanted to be alone and Nagi explains that seeing Sakuya’s happy family made her a bit lonely. Hayate tells her that there are some hopeless parents like his. Nagi agrees. Hayate then adds that if it’s staying like a family, then she has both him and Maria with her. Nagi turns around again and says that sometime in the near future, Maria would leave after falling in love. Her mother already left her. The previous butler promised her that he will stay by her side but also disappeared.
Hayate thinks as he stares at Nagi. What can he possibly say to a sad little girl? He tries to think of something to cheer her up. He then decides on a thing and calls out to Nagi, making her turn around to see…
Anti-climactic Ending 2, GETTO!!
Hayate used Frost Joke!
Well, he gets a well-deserved beating for it.
Since he’s so hopeless, Nagi declares that she will keep him by her side. Hayate promises never to leave Nagi’s side. Sakuya whacks Hayate’s back and congratulates him. Even though they saw that trick earlier, it was funnier the second time. Maria was also there and was about to lecture Nagi when she suddenly hugs her.
Hug~
As usual, Maria doesn't have a clue~ Nyoro~n~
Sakuya then unleashes her super birthday fireworks.
Come on, Hayate. Hug your "imouto"!
Hina and Ayumu also see the fireworks and they deduce it must be some celebration by a very rich person like Nagi.
Kasumi Aika and Haru-san also watch the fireworks. Haru-san comments on how rich people can really do anything they want. Aika agrees but then coughs and notes to herself that there also a lot of other things that money can’t buy while staring at a pendant that looks exactly like the one Sanzenin Mikado handed over to Hayate.
Plot device detected!!
Even Wataru, Isumi and Saki watch from inside.
Ayumu, Hina, Hayate and Nagi narrate that even though they’re looking up from different places… they are all looking at the same sky.
GOOD END, GETTO DAZE!!
—
A fitting conclusion to a wonderful series!
Well, season two is coming to a close. Even though there’s still one more episode, you can be given the impression that this is the last one. This episode is really one of its finest ones.
Hina’s moe-moe panic mode in the ferris wheel is just too cute. It’s really nice how Shizuka Itou portrays her. Ayumu’s reaction on Hina’s confession was also priceless. She was completely expecting something very different. Their moments in the ferris wheel is very, very nice. I’d say that was really the highlight of the episode.
Kasumi Aika seems to have a story of her own. The mystery girl keeps popping up on Hayate’s flashbacks as early as Episode 10, only labeling her as A-tan.
Sakuya and her complex is also a bit funny, especially cute when she started to say “Hayate-oniichan”. The ending is also nice and pretty cute, with everyone looking up at the same sky.
I also found out that I was right. Sakuya’s father is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi (also Nonohara Kaede of the same anime and most notable for being Kamina from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)
Finally, we get to hear about Hayate’s older brother in the anime. This thing has only been mentioned in the manga before. It’s odd how almost every character’s background was explored except Hayate’s. Will we hear from it next season? Will there be a next season?
Overall seasonal/series review will be done next time. The final episode of Hayate no Gotoku!! 2nd Season. It’s about… Nagi with a fever? Nagi also promises new characters in the preview.
Go Go, Saki!

What the teens thought: We watched part of this series on a Friday night as a special screening in 2007. The title was chosen by Teen Advisory Board members (most of whom were female) to show to a mostly male crowd. Even though this is definitely a shojo title (romance plays heavily in the plot, lots of pretty people) the guys still responded well to the title. I think they enjoyed some of the embarrassing moments the main character is subjected to. Still, they enjoyed the shonen pick of the evening (One Piece) a lot more. Probably because it’s more violent and involves pirates.
What I thought: This is a fun one for clubs looking for shojo titles. The main character follows the standard shojo heroin template in that she’s awkward, flakey, but well-meaning. Guys will appreciate the spurting blood and the fanservice. Girls will appreciate the romance and lighter plot line.
+ Some comedy to interest both guys and girls
+ Romance to satisfy female club members
+ Well- animated
- Fanservice may make more conservative clubs uncomfortable (lots of large breasts)
- Some guys may get bored waiting for the action and jokes
Crítica: Capítulo bom. A luta entre Ippo e Woli é intensa. Valeu a pena esperar tantas semanas.

So I just got in from Dragon*Con, and boy are my arms tired hardy harr harr. No, seriously. They are tired, from elbowing my way through crowds for three days, dancing for four hours straight, and driving six hours with only two stops. This was my first year at D*C, and while it wasn’t my first con of any kind – I’ve been to a few piddly, local anime cons – it was my first huge con. So naturally I came underprepared, didn’t eat or sleep enough, didn’t bring water, overexerted myself, and came home with a bad case of the con crud. You know that lull that comes after your favorite holidays, when you keep vascillating between basking in the glow of it all and being depressed that it’s over? Add belligerent sinuses and a Nyquil hangover to that and you’ve got how I feel right now. I’M HAPPY *AND* ANGRY! Nevertheless, I feel the need to write about my experiences before I forget them all, so I’m medicating myself with soup and X-E’s Halloween jukebox and trudging boldly onward. All you Trekkies and TV addicts, ch-check it out.
Day One: Friday
The first thing we did Friday, besides wait forever to register, was to get in a line that snaked out behind a hotel and that someone assured us was “for Shatner and Nimoy”. We waited in this line for some time before we discovered it was the line for photo ops, not for the actual panel. As cool as it would be to stand next to Spock for four seconds, I am not a person who typically can bust out 80 bucks for something like that. So we ran off in a hurry looking for the Shatner and Nimoy panel, but it was already full, so we had to catch the overflow viewing on a screen in another room. Boo-urns. The panel was still good though. I won’t recount the whole thing because God knows it’ll be on Youtube soon enough, but one of the highlights was hearing them both say “dickhead” approximately ten times in thirty seconds.
I also went to a session where I learned about something called modular origami, where you fold pieces of paper into little cubes and stuff, and then build stuff out of the cubes. It was fun, except that it apparently takes all of the trees in the Amazon to make anything cool. I think I’ll stick with Legos.
Much of the afternoon was ruined by some unanticipated money drama, but the day was redeemed by a Venture Bros fan panel. A friend who doesn’t know dick about the Venture Bros went with me, and it was fun to watch her grow increasingly alarmed as people discussed naked clone armies, implied twincest, magic murder bags, and Klaus Nomi. There were trivia questions, and while I didn’t answer any, I got a free VB keychain anyway. Sweet deal.
After that we went to a panel with a bunch of voice actors who I’m ashamed to admit I mostly hadn’t heard of. When it comes to VAs I’m pretty much an Adler/Paulsen/MacNeille/Azaria fangirl and I have no knowledge of these newfangled modern kids and their rock and roll music. The only one I was really familiar with was Vic Mignogna who plays Edward on Fullmetal Alchemist, and I’ve only seen a few episodes of that because it makes me cry like a big pathetic baby. The only thing more depressing than FMA is those commercials where Sarah McLachlan sings over images of injured puppies. I need to be kept under observation away from strings and sharp objects after seeing one of those.
I was interrupted from this panel when my mom called and informed me that she is batshit insane. See, the reason I went to the Venture Bros panel with a friend who doesn’t watch the show is that my other friend, who wanted to go to the panel, got separated from us at some point and couldn’t find the room the panel was in. I had her cell phone because I’d been separated from everyone when I went to the origami thing, and I couldn’t answer it during the VB panel because we were squeezed into the room like human Tetris blocks, so she called my mom to ask her for my other friend’s cell phone number, which was extremely helpful since my other friend was sitting right next to me and was obviously in the same situation. My mother’s thoroughly rational response to this was to freak out and assume that my friend had been wandering lost in a desert for 40 years. So she phoned hotel security to inform them that my friend, who I should add is 22 years old, was lost. Because she got separated from us for an hour and a half. At a con with more than 30,000 people.
When I got home I asked my mom what the security guy said to her. She says he hung up. I don’t blame him one bit.
That night, we went to a costume contest. It was… meh. There were a couple of totally badass costumes which were so large and heavy that they could, in a pinch, double as fallout shelters. But mostly it was just a bunch of foofy Victorian dresses, and while I appreciate the work that went into making them, I just don’t get geeked over that stuff. Despite being in possession of a uterus, I’m not very girly, and my reaction to big boofy dresses is usually to ponder the logistics of going to the bathroom in such a thing. Also unimpressive was the fact that it was -17 degrees in the room, plus someone sat next to me despite the entire rest of the row being open.
We interrupt this geekfest to bring you a Public Service Announcement. Please do not sit immediately next to a stranger, particularly in a situation where the chairs are approximately half an asscheek wide each, if there are seven open seats just to the left of you and no one is waiting to sit in them. Failing to at least leave the customary one-seat gap makes you seem intrusive and creepy, and deprives people of desperately needed ass-room. This message paid for by the Council to Prevent Me From “Accidentally” Elbowing You in the Face.
So my Friday was lukewarm, and I was worried that the entire con was just not going to live up to my expectations. Fortunately, things got way the hell better on…
Day Two: Saturday
Saturday started out with the famous Dragon*Con parade, featuring hordes of zombies, Klingons, stormtroopers, Hogwarts students, steampunks, people whose costumes I couldn’t decipher, and even a tiny Dr. Horrible with his dad Captain Hammer. There was a Ghostbusters car, Robot Chicken, Shredder, and at least half a dozen of The Monarch’s henchmen. It was EPIC WIN. We found out later that the parade was on CNN, which seemed incredible until we remembered CNN is based in Atlanta and they probably just wanted a cheap local story that didn’t involve people bitching about dead grass in Piedmont Park. Some photos:
Now, I can show you pictures of this parade all day long and you will never glean from them what made the whole thing so awesome. It was the feeling in the air. Even though this was the South and it wasn’t even Labor Day yet, everything about the parade screamed autumn at the top of its lungs. The weather was (mercifully, for the people in costume) unseasonably cool. The chill in the air, the festive mood, the sound of marching bands blaring, and the sight of hundreds of costumed geeks all melded together to send one clear message: Halloween season is here, bitches. To hell with waiting for October! Citizens of the Netherworld, rejoice! The time for fake blood and fun-size Snickers is nigh!
After the parade my friends split off to go elsewhere while I immediately got in line for the Venture Bros panel. This was the real deal, with Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick, and since they’re more popular than they are famous, they didn’t get one of the huge ballrooms. This meant that not everyone who wanted to see the panel got in, so lining up two hours early turned out to be wise and totally worth it. I got to sit second row center, which is pretty much optimum fangirl seating. Again, the panel will be on Youtube so I won’t recount the whole thing, but they showed part of one of the new season 4 episodes and then answered questions. Someone asked who they think would win in a fight between Helen Keller and Anne Frank, and they argued about this for ten minutes. I strongly encourage you all to debate this for yourselves in the comments. My money’s on Helen, if only because Anne would get too distracted looking at her tits.
After that, one of my friends joined me and we went to see Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam. It was probably a fun panel, but I wouldn’t know for sure. The room was dark and cool, and it was late in the day by this point, so I was barely conscious through most of it. All I remember is something about Eric Idle being naked on a children’s show, and something about TV censors mistaking blush wine for “menstrual urine”. Yeah.
Adam Savage was speaking immediately after this in the same room, and we tried to get in line for that, except that we couldn’t actually find the line. Taking this as a bad sign, we gave up and decided to go ahead and catch the next shuttle to the Georgia Aquarium, where Dragon*Con Night was going on. As further proof of Halloween’s looming presence, the aquarium was playing flat-out horror movie soundtrack music as we waited to get in. I’m not sure if they were getting an early start on the season or if the staff was just confused about why a bunch of adults were wearing superhero costumes in early September, but the music seemed like an odd fit for the overall theme of “here are some fish.”
Aside from that, the only thing I remember from the aquarium is that when we went to pet stingrays, one of them slid up the side of the tank and splashed at one of my friends. We couldn’t decide if it liked her or wanted to make an Irwin out of her, but it was funny as shit either way.
Also, I went down a slide shaped like a giant whale. And that’s Saturday.
Day Three: Sunday
This ended up being our last day at the con, because by Monday we were exhausted. Fortunately, Sunday was the best day.
I dragged my poor friends out of bed hella early so I could get in line to fangirl squee over see Leonard Nimoy again, this time in person if it killed me. Actually, it’s not really accurate to say I dragged them out of bed; while getting up at ass-thirty was my idea, I was way backlogged on sleep and they actually had to prod me to get up. They probably sensed that I’d be handing down some wrath if they let me sleep through this after the wrong-line debacle on Friday. They chose wisely.
We had to stand in line for two hours, and I heard from the lady in front of me about what it’s like to get autographs and photos at the con; apparently you can’t talk to the celebrities because the staff rushes you through too fast, you can’t shake their hands because they’re stuck behind Plexiglas like so many salad-bar contents, you can’t look directly at them unless it’s through a pin-sized hole in a paper plate because you’ll damage your retinas, etc. From what I hear the guests didn’t like this setup any more than the congoers did – after all, if I were going to sit in a booth all day so people dressed as aliens and Sailor Scouts could gawk at me, I’d at least wanna be able to ask them why their nametags all said things like BorgNymph.
So we got in to see Nimoy and hear him talk about his non-Trek work – photography, voiceover work, forgotten zombie movies from the 50s, and so forth. It was fascinating to me, but I realize there are probably a grand total of 15 people on Earth who would say the same, so I’ll skip most of the details. One thing that stands out is that his newest photography project, “Secret Selves”, involves a bunch of cosplayers or furries or something. Yes, there is now something nerdier than dressing up as a wizard: having Leonard Nimoy take a picture of you dressed up as a wizard because your nerdiness provides him with some sort of insight into the human psyche. Fascinating.
From there, we got in a gigundofuckingrifficmassive line to see Patrick Stewart. There were some shenanigans involved here, because the Dragon*Con staff decided around 11:30 that it was time to start the Patrick Stewart line. The problem with this was that there was already a Patrick Stewart line; people had clearly been standing in this line since before Patrick Stewart was actually born. You could not possibly miss the fact that a line had already started; it snaked all the way around whatever floor we were on and looped around three or four times, probably violating numerous fire codes in the process. So I can see why they might have needed to move the line, but instead they started a brand new one, meaning many of the people who’d been waiting for hours weren’t at the front anymore. We actually ended up way closer to the front of the line than we should have been, but it wasn’t as if there was any clear way to tell where the fuck we belonged. Still I made sure not to say ANYTHING that indicated I had gotten ahead in line, because several of the people near me were out for BLOOD. One girl chewed out a staffmember for about 15 minutes, explaining that Patrick Stewart was the only reason she had come to the con and she’d been in line since approximately 1974 and if she didn’t get to see him the sky would turn red and the Earth would crash into the sun. So I definitely didn’t want her to know I had only just gotten in line recently.
Of all the people I saw at Dragon*Con (that I had specifically planned on seeing), Patrick Stewart is the one I’ve seen in the least number of interviews, so I was surprised at his demeanor. He’s very funny, though I kind of suspected that; what I didn’t expect was that he’d be so… humble? Not that I expected him to be an egomaniac like William Shatner, but he’s Patrick Fucking Stewart. Whether he’s playing a starship captain or a sassy gay man in a pink beret, he invariably comes off as the kind of guy who is quite capable of blasting your face off with eye lasers if you piss him off. So it caught me off guard to see him nearly blush over compliments and hear him talk about how he’s afraid to get caught watching himself on TV.
After that panel we ate some lunch, sat outside for a little while and for some reason received free ice cream, and headed over to get ready for what ultimately was my favorite part of the entire con. See, what really got me to the con was all the big-name stars, and I was really sure that was going to be my favorite part. But in all honesty, it wasn’t that great. Once the initial fangirl thrill of ohmigod he’s right there in this room that I am also in RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME wears off, you realize you just spent three hours standing in line for something you can watch on Youtube, in the comfort of your own home, with absolutely no risk of having your eye poked out by the metal steampunk fairy wings of a stranger who is sitting practically in your lap. So seeing celebrities wasn’t that awesome.
You know what was awesome? This:
You really can’t see me in that video, which is just as well because I didn’t know the dance all that well and I looked like a dork anyway. There are very few situations in life where failing to wear a ridiculous costume makes you look like more of a dork, but Dragon*Con is one of them.
What we were trying to do is break the official world record for the most people simultaneously dancing to “Thriller” in a single location, which previously was 242. I think the organizers were expecting to get maybe 300 people if they were really super lucky, because they were totally unprepared when 903 people ended up dancing. We had a big ballroom designated for rehearsal space, and there was absolutely no way in hell we could possibly rehearse in there without everyone being trampled to death. And that was only the people who showed up for the first rehearsal. We ended up breaking into small groups, eventually taking over the entire bottom floor of the Sheraton and confusing the hell out of all the hotel guests who just wanted to walk through the lobby without navigating through a horde of zombies.
We haven’t received word yet on if we got the record, but I don’t care if we do or not. I had a great time and learned a dance I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid, which I can also show off at parties as long as everyone else at the party is as nerdy as I am. (Not that I get invited to any other sorts of parties.) This was definitely one of the more fun things I’ve done in my life, and if they do it again next year I will put it way higher on my list of priorities than any celebrity panel.
I also learned some things about human psychology, namely that the presence of TV cameras temporarily lowers human IQ. All of the people at this thing were intelligent; they were capable of both carrying on a meaningful conversation and learning a complex choreography routine in two hours. They were not at all the type of people you generally associate with mindless television behavior. Yet anytime a TV cameraperson showed up (and there were a lot of them there), everyone – including me – would start jumping up and down and yelling WOOOOOOOOOOOO, as if yelling really loud would prove to everyone who saw us on TV that we were absolutely the coolest people who ever lived. From now on I’m going to be more forgiving of the apparently stupid people I see on TV. For all I know they might have been discussing astrophysics over a cup of Earl Grey before the cameras showed up and destroyed all their higher mental faculties.
Also awesome: there was a person dressed as a gigantic sparkly Michael Jackson glove. I promise I am not making this up. Look:
All in all, I had a fantastic time at Dragon*Con, and it was worth any amount of con crud I’ve had to deal with since I got home. Even considering the fun activities though, I think the best part was just the timing of the whole thing. Since the con is Labor Day weekend, and since it’s mostly about sci-fi and fantasy and horror, it makes for a nice transition ritual between seasons. It’s both a last hurrah for summer and a first glimpse of Halloween. Since I have a mid-September birthday I usually try to hold off until at least after that before I begin my tribute to Satan. It’s still too hot in Florida to really get in the fall mood until then. This year, though, I couldn’t resist. A weekend of costumes and parades and zombie dancing gave me the Halloween fever, and now I can’t get through each day without a good dose of ghosts, pumpkins and Oingo Boingo. I suppose it’s fair enough, since by the time it actually feels like fall here I’ll be itching for Christmas.
Consider this your official kickoff to I Love Junk’s Halloween season. I realize I tend to go MIA for months at a time, but this year I’ve got something up my sleeve. Check back real soon to find out… if you dare.
