What We've Watched: Karin (Also known as Chibi Vampire)

Synopsis: In the 21st century, a family of vampires settled down in Japan. They lived among humans and sucked their blood quietly and discreetly. However their daughter Karin had a secret that she could not share with anyone. She did not suck blood like the rest of the family. Instead, her blood level increases! She is a blood-making vampire!

What the teens thought: We watched part of this series on a Friday night as a special screening in 2007.  The title was chosen by Teen Advisory Board members (most of whom were female) to show to a mostly male crowd.  Even though this is definitely a shojo title (romance plays heavily in the plot, lots of pretty people) the guys still responded well to the title.  I think they enjoyed some of the embarrassing moments the main character is subjected to.  Still, they enjoyed the shonen pick of the evening (One Piece) a lot more.  Probably because it’s more violent and involves pirates.

What I thought: This is a fun one for clubs looking for shojo titles.  The main character follows the standard shojo heroin template in that she’s awkward, flakey, but well-meaning.  Guys will appreciate the spurting blood and the fanservice.  Girls will appreciate the romance and lighter plot line.

+ Some comedy to interest both guys and girls

+ Romance to satisfy female club members

+ Well- animated

- Fanservice may make more conservative clubs uncomfortable (lots of large breasts)

- Some guys may get bored waiting for the action and jokes

- Dubbed cast isn’t very good
